Brake job

Amazing what I am reading hear and what I am having to do. I bought my 2007 Prius two years ago this month with 48K miles and then there was 70% wear left on the front brakes. Since then I have driven the car nearly 40K miles. Today, I will be getting front new brake pads for my car. Obviously I drive a lot, but do so in heavy traffic in Seattle very often. I have no doubt that I need them. I can hear a bit of noise when pressing on my brakes, backing out of my driveway, no pin needle noise that signals the time to get them, but close enough. I have been bringing my car to family friend- very reputable mechanic for a long time and have no doubt its time to get them done. Absolutely love the car and I hope to get 200K miles on this before having to consider another purchase - then GenIV Prius which I hope is as unique of design as when the GenII came out.

 

Well after hearing squeeling and other such noises from the front, I checked the front pads. They were real low maybe 2 mm where I could see them. The car has 95,319 miles on the clock. I drive in hilly San Francisco and its an 06 prius. I bought pads and a small tube of synthetic wheel bearing grease and last night changed the pads on the front. All I did was disconnect the battery wait 2 minutes and kept the fob in the house. It went easy and took about 1 and 1/2 hours to do. The little wear spring was touching the rotor on one side.

I am also wondering about brake work on a Prius. I have a 2011 Prius with 109,000 miles. I was just quoted $1000 for pads and machined rotors. Is this normal? It seems high to me. This is a dealership quote. I asked if it had anything to do with the hybrid brake system, and he said no.

 

I was quoted around $737 for rear brake job for my 2005 Prius at my local dealership. I'm not sure what front ones would've cost. I would suggest you to price shop around your Toyota dealerships to see how much each one charges.

 

I Did my brakes on 2010 @170000 mi.

Definitely shop around. Friction brake surfaces on the Prius are industry standard and any brake shop can replace them.

The Gen2 Prius has an electrical brake pump which needs to be disabled by disconnecting the 12V battery during a brake job. Make sure your mechanic knows this.

Do you have a pulsing brake pedal? What signs and symptoms are you seeing? You may not even need new rotors. The Prius is very easy on the friction brakes in most driving conditions.
