I was at the dealer for routine maintenance oil, tire rotation etc. they told me they recommended new spark plugs since they didn't know if they've been changed before. I bought the car at 105k miles and I'm at 137k and doesn't show in their system that they've been changed.

But the cost was way to much for me 230$ for spark plugs I could get for under 35$. Does anyone know anyone in Phoenix who is reputable and trustworthy I could pay to have them changed with me already having the spark plugs on me. What does a job like that charge or how much should I give (as I've had people in the past tell me they'd take a tip for something that wasn't over 1-2 hours). i usually prefer paying friends or people over the dealer for smaller things.

High end of labor would probably hit $90 at a dealer. Plug cost at a dealer.....have no idea. But just for fun....say $20 per plug at a dealership.

$170 would be what I consider the super-high end of what it would cost at a dealer. My mechanic swapped out my four Camry plugs a year ago and with parts and labor it was $90.

2nd gen plug costs, from the US Amazon site:

    DENSO SK16R11 ($12.68)
    NGK IFR5A11 ($77.76) <fugedaboutit, lol !

And an hour's labour tops. I believe 2nd gen plug access is fairly straighforward. 3rd gen is a pain btw.

Consider DIY? You should have a good low-range torque wrench (I'd guess 15 ft/lb with dry threads, 13 with very thin application of anti-seize, basically apply thin and wipe off), ratchets, extensions, a set of assorted spark plug sockets. It might be 5/8", or 9/16". The latter is 3rd gen size (or 15 mm?).

It's a probably a bit more than an hour for a first-time DIYer. You have to dismount the relay block (two bolts). Then disconnect, unbolt, and remove the four coils. It's all easy stuff.

Try to price shop around dealerships to see what the cost will be. You'll be surprised by some of the price differences. Some dealerships have higher overhead than others. You can also try calling Pep Boys to see how much labor they'll charge if you provide the spark plugs. I would also recommend you to change out the PCV valve since you are already replacing the spark plugs. Some dealerships will just charge you the part cost since you are getting the spark plugs replaced. Good luck!

The 5/8" socket fits the Gen 2 plugs; Gear Wrench 80546 works well.
