Comparison with Hyundai ioniq?

    I'm not sure, but this may just be a result of a newer innovation that is being introduced into the North American models first but will be on all geographic versions of the car very soon.

    I want to drive an Ioniq to see what it is like, but I would be unlikely to buy one for this reason. It has complexity for complexity's sake, with the DCT, and then an extra clutch between the ICE and the electric motor. I like that the Prius has no clutches, and no shifting apparatus, yet it is efficient, and drives well.

    I realize that everyone hates CVT's, except people who actually drive them on a regular basis. I have cars with manual transmissions, and conventional automatics, and the E-CVT of the Prius has one advantage over all of them. It is impossible to abuse, no matter what you do with the pedals. At least is seems that way, and I like it.

    I agree with all of your points. I'm curious as to how the Ioniq drives but I'm certainly NOT willing to be an early adopter. It will take a few years, if ever, to convince me that the Ioniq is reliable enough to compete with the Prius. The reliability of the Prius eCVT is legendary at this point so I'm highly doubtful the Ioniq will ever match it.

    Just came back to the thread and had to look up the Fuelly reports for both vehicles. I did the 2016 prius because of no-prime available that model year. As a side note an average of 216 vehicles is much better than an average of 24 vehicles

    The IONIC has Android Auto and Apple Play ..

    I would pick the Ionic over a Ford , but not a Toyota .

    Since the Ioniq Hybrid is direct competition with the 4G Prius, I'm interested in real-world MPG values for each. Using updated Fuely info - where there are now 32 Ioniq measurements, I tried a quick R program to determine if the Ioniq's MPG is significantly higher than the Prius.

    I threw out the lowest and highest Ioniq MPG measures on Fuely - 35 and 67, and ran a one-sided t-test where the null hypothesis (H0) is that the Ioniq's MPG is >= 50 (if that is the Prius average).

    I first loaded the Ioniq MPG values into "data":
    data = c(41,46,46,46,46,47,48...,59)
    then ran this t-test:
    t.test(data, mu=50, alternative="less")

    If the resulting p-value < 0.05, we reject H0, and assume the alternative hypothesis is correct - that the Ioniq gets less MPG than the Prius.

    If Prius average (mu) is 50, p-value was 0.78, so we accept H0
    If Prius average is 51, p-value was 0.27, we also accept H0

    But if Prius average (mu) is 52 or above, the p-value < 0.05, so we reject H0, and can state that the Ioniq's MPG is less than the Prius.

    Did you account for the time of year (climate) when these fuelly measurements were taken? Possibly more of the Ioniq reports came from winter conditions since it was only recently introduced in significant volume.

    Oh, yes, well, there are a lot of things I didn't account for. I only spent about 15 minutes putting together that info. I should run the numbers against Prius Fuely MPG values for the same time period, if I can slice their data that way. I was just wondering if Ioniq hybrid owners are getting close to the EPA MPG ratings, and if the average Prius driver was getting better MPG than the average Ioniq driver.

    I'd think the Ioniq might actually get a little better mpg than a Prius, because it is a parallel hybrid, rather than series-parallel like a Prius. Still, I'll stick with a Prius. I have no desire for the complexity-for-complexity's-sake DCT in the Ioniq.

    I wish someone would make the same comparison with Ioniq as we saw with Prius V vs Ford C-Max. There we had the actual fuel efficiency of the two cars driven side-by-side at various speeds. The Prius was consistenly more fuel efficient, but still Ford claimed best fuel efficiency.

    Fuely currently is reporting an average MPG rating of 52.6 for the 2016 Prius, but only 49.6 for the 2017 Prius. What? Is the 2017 value lower possibly because the 2017s have only been driving in the winter, and MPG is lower in cold temperatures? As a comparison, the 2016 Ioniq (was there a 2016 Ioniq?) shows 52.1 MPG on Fuely while the 2017 Ioniq shows 48.3.

    Some of us 2017 driver are too busy saving fuel to use Fuely? My daily average here in the foothills is usually mod-50s or higher. It gets lower in the cooler weather though.I have Trim Two with the NiMH battery, though.
