NOT a "can of worms", just a difficult problem to solve at low expense. I really like having 5 wheels in the rotation. I don't like -doing- the rotation, I'm getting too old for that! So I buy my tires at Kal. They rotate for free whenever I like. They patch for free as well. I let the young strapping folks who work there lift those heavy wheels (FJ Cruiser) or lift that low car (Prius) to change wheels.

I think if I wanted a spare in a G4 I would go for the full size shown above. I wonder if anyone has done the research on the Prime for a spare? Probably no room, no room, no room. ;)

That's because they have to conserve their dwindling oil supplies. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

A bad experience 28 years ago - and you're worried about it happening again?

    0) cell phones exist
    1) tires and cars have been very much updated.
    2) the roadway is likely much safer
    3) cell phones exist
    4) and on and on

If you're concerned of safety, dealing with replacing a flat is worse than simply calling someone to pick you up and letting AAA handle the vehicle.

I get wanting a spare for long road trips and remote area without cell service. Seems like a donut will get you to safety just fine. Having a matching tire without a wheel on it, is a weird insurance policy.

Just my opinion and worth what you paid for it ;)

cellphones only work if there is network coverage. There are parts of both Canada and the U.S. where coverage is limited.

But yes, knock on wood, I haven't needed to change tires on a road trip. (Or even got a flat for that matter so the probability for me is still fairly low).

The last flat scenario we had was a flat that got noticed, just as we pulled into mall parking lot, about 10 kms from home. Temp was near freezing. Had on hand: temp spare, plug repair kit, and a bicycle pump. I elected to swap over to the spare, head home, with our groceries. Then rolled the flat into the family room, did a plug repair, pumped it back up with the bicycle pump, and installed it back on the car.

I'd much rather that, been be dealing with a tow truck, having the car tied up at a repair place, have them tell you it's unrepairable, and perhaps it's time for a whole new set. And that'd be the worst time to be buying new tires.

I am glad things worked out for Mendel, but given that alternatives, this is NOT RECOMMENDED. In fact, I would go so far as to say that for many people what Mendel thinks to be a well-considered course of action, would be just plain STUPID. Sorry to be blunt, but this needs to be said.

I cannot site any STATISTICS but the RISK CANNOT BE UNDERESTIMATED

I mean seriously, while he might have fared well in then end, I expect that for many of us, the consequences of bringing a dirty flat tire into our family rooms would be bad. Really bad.

Wait, what? I thought you were going to caution about plug-repairs, and yeah I can see that. But tires in family rooms: that's a menace? I roll four in, every fall and spring, to wax them. Our family room has the 1980 original wall-to-wall, and it's dark.

My carrier's mobile coverage in Australia isn't real good once you get outside residential areas - BROWN means "Forget It":

I think it would be for most married guys.

I could probably wait until my wife goes out to run errands, but little gets past her.

That has me harkening to "that scene" in Pulp Fiction, where Mr. Wolf's services are required. :)

It's not so bad. With separate snow tires, the wheels when I bring them into the house have been previously washed (inside and out) and are bone-dry. And I stack them on carpet scraps, not directly on the wall-to-wall. With a flat repair yeah it's a bit grubby, but carpet scraps are employed. Too: our "family" room is more of a hobby room.

I gave up and bought a can of truck tire inflator. 90% of the time it will get me somewhere.

Er, just where are you trying to go, Swedish Chef? (I just glanced over at my pristine, new full-sized Dunlop spare gracing our garage floor. Damn, that feels good!)

Hahaha! Actually it does. Women don't like getting stranded on dark country roads in the boonies with only three good tires. We have more fears than most men. Just ask us. So I can throw that new spare baby in the car and hug it if I get stranded. That would make me feel much better even if I had to spend the night in the car! Of course I can call home or a friend and have him bring it if things get really bad and I am not too far away. Otherwise when heading to remote places like a farm that is high on my list, I will carry it in my back seat floor well, tied down of course. I am praying that this never happens, which it probably won't now that I have a new spare! Just think of it as my blankie!

I read this only this morning:
What are the main points to remember when travelling in a tunnel in Queensland?
    When travelling in a tunnel:
    ...
You are prohibited from travelling in a tunnel if:
    ...
    • you do not have a spare tyre
Glad I've at least got a DONUT.

The one thing that annoys me more than anything is the lack of spare on my 17 four touring. Within a few weeks I will search out how to modify and add a spare. I drive long distances in very rural areas. I have had blowouts and flats in past but non in last 8 years or so. There is no way I will use the repair kit and have that mess inside the rim and damage the tpms. You annoyed with Toyota for this decision of lack of spare period I think it should be a requirement that every car in America have a spare tire. kKind of shocked that it isn't.
