Hello everyone! My wife and I just picked up a 2005 Prius today. So far we love it. This forum seems to be a very active and helpful so we chose join in as well. What we know: - 149,000 Miles - Dorman battery with 3yr warrant installed in March 2017 - New water pump - New 300.00 battery with 3 year warranty What we don't know and have questions about: -How do we tell the trim level? -It came with 2 keys. 1 is smashed up and missing the actual key part but still starts the car. Neither of the keys work remotely. We have to remove the little metal key to get into the car. Also the key must be inserted to start the car. Can I reprogram the good one and just get a second new one and program that as well or do I need to get 2 new ones? - When it rains heavily water gets in the back trunk area. They don't know why. I am guessing a taillight seal? - The car says it has bluetooth but our phones don't recognize it. Is the system just too old? If not how do we set it up? - Best fix for installing a Aux cable? congrats and welcome! the fobs are really complicated, and the rain generally gets in from a crack where the rain gutter is welded to the body, or the hatch hinges or seal. that's all i know. all the best!
Welcome! I recently bought a 2005 and loving it. Try replacing the key fob battery and see if it will lock/unlock the car. My key fob wouldn't lock/unlock my car yesterday and I replaced the battery. Here is some helpful info for you: 2005 Prius Maintenance Schedule: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms/05ToyAllMS_MS0012/pdf/01omsour/2005/schedmai/51w1smt.pdf Important services to handle: Every 60,000 miles it is recommended by other members here to do transaxle fluid drain and refill. Per schedule at 100,000 miles: Replace engine and inverter coolant Per schedule at 120,000 miles: Replace spark plugs. (I would change out PCV valve at the same time as a preventative thing) Brake flush is not in the maintenance schedule but was recommended by members here. Per @Mendel Leisk: "Toyota Canada says tri-yearly or 48,000 km's (30K miles). Honda, fwiw, says tri-yearly regardless of mileage. For decades. I'd approach DIY brake fluidchange with caution. I've done our 3rd gen, it is possible without Techstream, and outlined in the Repair Manual. And @NutzAboutBolts has a video on it. But 2nd gen may have some variations." Throttle body cleaning would be a good preventative maintenance. Mass airflow sensor cleaning would be a good preventative maintenance. Per schedule every 30,000 miles: Replace cabin air filter and engine air filter. I would check to see if the above things have been done by previous owner(s). If not, consider getting them done. Also higher mileage Prius are known to burn through more oil. I am not sure if I hit on most of the things but those are the things that I have done after buying my Prius. Good luck!
I already tried switching batteries. Like I said neither key will do anything other than start the car once placed in the ignition switch. I think the keys need reprogrammed. I see a guide on how to do it for new keys but I don't see one for original keys. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

it may be, that the fobs aren't original. i may be wrong, but used fobs can be programmed to start the car, but may not have full functionality.
Check the key button under the steering wheel & under the dashboard. Press that once and see if that fixes your issue.
If I could figure out how to attach a photo I would send the photo of the keys. They are either original or just really old. He said they were both original. Again one is in great shape with he metal key and one looks like ti was dropped from an airplane without the metal key. Both still run the car. Neither do any other function
You had me excited. I went and tried it. No luck. Now I am not sure if that button is supposed to be in our out?
I tried it both ways several times. No luck. But I am worried now that I don't know which way is right for when I do fix it. haha
