Recommendation for compact spare for Prime

I am assuming, if you get the 4th generation spare wheel, that it will fit being both cars have the same size tires.

Compact from the manufacturer (Toyota). Parts department should be able to order one. Or you could check Ebay. It needs to fit 2016 and up models.

a full size wheel and tire is a lot cheaper, and you can get them from tire rack, if you can't find salvage or on ebay. it takes up a bit more space, but on the plus side, if you need it, you don't have to deal with all the issues of a compact spare.

 

As I said in a recent post somewhere in the PriusChat Universe, I'm volunteering to guinea pig myself (oink, oink) and purchasing a new "donut spare"/space-saver, wheel and tire from my nearby America's Tire store. Of course, Jose, the guy I had spoken to on the phone over the weekend, was not there today.
Joseph helped me out, and after a while of searching, he was able to place an order for the assembly, and is charging me $180. Yes, I will have them mount the new tire and wheel assembly on my car and drive it around a little bit to make sure that it works. I will then report to all you wonderful folks and let you know what I find out. Let's hope that his supplier comes through and sends him the correct items.

will you be able to squish it down to a teeny tiny tire so it will fit in the hatch area?

 

I was wondering what to do about this myself. I kept the donut from my Civic, but haven't put it in the Prime yet. It's 15" (it should probably work on the Prime for an emergency, right?)

But honestly... if you think about it, I don't know about others, but I'm not someone who would get out of the car, use a jack, and put on the donut myself. I'd call AAA, but if you call them, then they could just take you to a place to get a new tire. The only drawback would be that it might not be as cheap (or the brand) you want if you're far away from home. There was one time a few years ago when I was driving my dad in his car, and the tire blew. Late Sunday night, nothing open, about 50 miles from home. Called AAA, and the truck came. Since it was late on a Sunday night there weren't as many tire choices... the driver could get us the proper tire but it was a bit pricey and my dad wanted another brand, so we had the AAA put the donut on, and drove the 50 miles home at a slow speed with the blinkers on. So in that one circumstance it might be helpful to have a donut, but I'm leaning against putting the donut in the Prime. It's heavy (will cut down on MPG), there's really no room for it (I have to put a diagonal stand in the hatch that just barely fits, so a tire would make that impossible) and if/when a flat were to occur, I'd call AAA regardless. If it's during day hours they could tow me anywhere (a big tire store, etc). If it's night, well... that's the one time a donut might help, but I'll probably just go without it, at least for now..

 

Oh absolutely barnacle breath !! If that puppy will fit anywhere in the trunk, I'm a happy camper; besides my cat, Yewee, the only potential passenger, will have nothing to do with automobiles !

My intent would be to only take the donut spare for long trips. I'm perfectly reckless enough () to rely on the repair kit for my local driving. As has also been pointed out, the AAA, and mainly the Toyota Safety Connect support for my Advanced for 3 years will provide support for local problems. Hey, I'm more likely to be hit by a drunk (twice so far), or deported by Trump (naturalized citizen), than be left stranded with a failed tire.

Take the info to the dealership too, see what they'll do. If they're at least reasonably close in price, that's the route I'd go. Actually, if you go to the dealership they should come up with the same part numbers, tire spec. Take along a cheat sheet with the above info, but just to cross-check them.

Thanks for the info on the specs for "donut" spare unit. My search for the item in the REAL world continues! The price quoted by Jose of $180 is according to Joseph, for a full size tire and wheel; what else is new. Sounds like the price is probably double what I was originally quoted. Now the guy I was working with yesterday, Joseph, is of course, off today. So I sit here with bated breath waiting for his return call.
I knew this was going to be fun!

Well the saga continues in my search for the donut spare/wheel from America's Tire. The price has now risen to a bit over $356 for both per Joseph, with an estimated 8 day delivery date.
Sucks! Stay tuned. I am wearing my stoic hat. See what I do for you kids!!
I'm not convinced I would ever use the thing...

If you have an LKQ location near you, you may be able to buy a spare from them.
Probably a lot cheaper than buying a new one.
