Took delivery of a loaded 2016 Four Touring (new) over the weekend. Decided to try the intelligent park assist in my subdivision incidentally after a futile trip to Best Buy for a Qi-enabled iPhone 7 case/adapter (ended up ordering one on Amazon as I should have done all along ;)). Right rear wheel has a medium wheel rash both on the frame, hub cab and even tore some of the tire. I remember hearing of this issue with the BMW i3 park assist, however I assumed Toyota would have sorted this out especially more than a decade after feature debuted.

Any advice? Dealer has been great to work with, and this happened 28 hours after taking delivery. Declined the wheel and tire plan, but it seems ridiculous that this happens and is inflicted by the Toyota system, not driver error.

Any suggestions of what to pursue/do at this juncture? Otherwise extremely pleased with the new vehicle.

    Thanks.

most complaints seem to have been about being too far from the curb. perhaps they fixed it in the 2017?

That's too bad. Really hard to prove you didn't do it, that it was the park-assist.

It could be worse. My wife was looking at a FORD FOCUS a few years ago with Park Assistance, and asked the salesman "what is it?".

The salesman grinned and said - "we think it is still in the experimental stage - the Manager was trying it out when we got our first one here, and it rammed into one of our other cars". But that was about 5 years ago, hopefully they've perfected it.

I see that you hail from The People's Republic of Cambridge, so I'm somewhat surprised by your question, since to most of your neighbours (particularly those to your south) the wheel-rash you describe is one of the more common effects of "Braille Parking", as I think it is known in that part of the commonwealth! :)

    BTW Welcome to PriusChat!!!

Similar to adaptive cruise control and LKA, these features assist the driver but ultimately the driver is responsible. I agree that IPA shouldn't scuff the curb, but then again it doesn't know where the curb is so the driver is still needed to make that determination. From page 454 of the owners manual:

Sorry to hear about your new wheels! I've been using the IPA on my car and like other comments it usually parks too far away from the curb. Was your 4 delivered with the Yokohama BlueEarth touring tires? This particular tire is wider than the rim, I've never had this before in a tire, advantage being is that a bad parking manuever won't scrape the rim.
