Steering Wheel peeling

    Has anyone else had any issues with the extremely thin covering on the steering wheel of the 2016 prius peeling? I had my car for less then 6 months, and the "leather" has already peeled and started coming off the wheel. The car is a lease, so I'm worried about getting dinged for replacing it.

    I thought it was just me!

    I have had my car about 16 months.

    Several months ago I felt a rough spot -- on the backside hidden from view -- at 12 O'Clock.

    This spot was actually the top surface of the leather peeling away over about a 3/8" circular area. The spot did not seem to grow, and I wondered if it had always been there since I got the car.

    I looked at it earlier this pas week and it seemed like a line was extending away from the abraded area. Not peeling off yet, just looking like it might.

    Anyone else?

    In the States it is 3 years or 36,000 miles.

    Anyone else have the very top surface peeling on their steering wheels?

    When parked in the sun, I always put on a sun protector over the wheel:

    I had a MAZDA new in 1995 where the wheel delaminated (the urethane cover came loose from the metal inner), was replaced under warranty, but they suggested a sun protector cover.

    Is this the base model urethane wheel, or the premium "leather" (SOFTEX) accented wheel?

    After reading your comment, I wrapped my steering wheel with black Gorilla Tape. That solves that.

    Doesn't appear to be "peeling." That looks like somebody picking at the SofTex. Maybe unconsciously? also looks like an indentation of some sort.

    All known ones here (first one is unknown) are the premium Softex wheel. The US does not get the leather wheel they have in the UK.
