Charge or not before HV rebuild?

    Limp mode only
    Has not been started for over 30 days

    Should I try to charge the battery before removing it for disassembly and testing; or is it better to leave it in this discharged state to get a better idea of which modules are the strongest?


    I purchased a 2007 Prius a couple of months ago. I knew that it had a bad HV battery and the purchase price reflected that. I have done a lot of reading here, and salute and thank all of you who contribute to such a great knowledge base. I have also watched the youtube videos, and now have some spare time and I am about to remove the battery to identify the cells that need replacing and to see if the pack is salvageable. I just haven't found an intelligent informed opinion on the question I posed above.

    If you know there is a bad module, then there isn't much value in charging & balancing the cells before starting the rebuild process. Load Test to find the bad module, change that block, then cycle the pack a few times to recondition and equalize the replacement modules with the rest of the pack and you should be back on the road. Can be done in 2-3 days start to finish with our products

    ^^^^^^ Spot on.......load testing is key to make sure you identify the modules that are good vs ones that fall short then load test replacements to ensure the new modules will work well and finally grid charge and do the deep discharge cycles to bring back lost capacity.
