You can hook up charger under the hood, and that area is never secure to rats and mice anyway: freeway size opening exist in the wheel wells. With my charger I pop and raise the hood, connect the charger (I use a quick connect, a lot more bullet-proof than alligator clips, though the latter will work if they're compact and you're careful), then lower, just to rest atop the latch, ajar.

This is in my usual scenario, when charging in a secure garage. I've also used it out in the driveway, and there I'll drop the hood, make it latch. It slightly pinches the charger cord, which is fairly heavy gauge.

jerrymildred, I understand the 12 V battery is under the mat in the rear of the car. If this is true, what would I connect a trickle charger under the hood to?

Look in your manual for jumpstart point. Assuming you're right about the aft battery (and I believe it's only with 4th gen Prius they've gone back to under the hood batter), the jumpstart point is likely in the engine bay fuse box. Yeah check the manual.

If you've got a charger that comes with an optional quick connect, with a little tinkering you can wire it in, so you don't have to pop the fuse box cover everytime, or mess with crocodile clips. That's not such a big deal other, but if you're connecting the charger a lot, then it's worthwile to wire in the quick connect.

Great !!! I have not checked under the hood yet, but that would allow me to easily attach a trickle charger and be good to go. This car is so new to me I have not figured everything out yet. Thanks to all for your help.

    Just google:

    Toyota tech info

Probably first hit, click on "manuals " Tab, enter your car info, and search.

Owner's Manuals and various others are available, in PDF format, viewable in a browser and/or to download.

Definitely it would Sir! Most of the Prius cars over here, are imported used from the USA.
