As the weather gets warmer (even hot) the car impresses me more and more. The car even read out 38.4 miles EV! And this morning I got my record 185.9 MPG in 49 miles. Mind you I easily hit 90 MPG in the winter and got around 60-70 MPG in the PiP in the summer...but...this is triple the efficiency of the PiP overall. I'm thoroughly impressed and don't have to sink that much electricity into it. Think about it...

$0.12 cents per KwH, about 6 KwH to charge that's : 72 cents for ~35 miles.

Meanwhile we could say, if I drove it at 54 MPG it'd be $1.10 for 27 miles.

FYI we also have the Pacifica Hybrid for our family trips which is reporting 40 miles and we haven't filled up after 450 miles and over 2 weeks of ownership and some long distance travelling.

I'm addicted to Plugin Hybrids and Electric Driving without the worry of long distance travelling.

To top it off, we do have solar...so that $0.12 cents per KwH boils down to about $0.05 on average.

This car is ridiculous. Other than the non 5 seat choice, smaller trunk, it's great. Oh...I want to see an improvement on Battery Capacity + the solar panels....

Tesla had this down pat, he would often demonstrate tricks of using electricity and field forces, most people at the time did not understand what he was doing. most people nowadays do not understand electricity. To assuage your concerns, my post was all a spoof. Just a joke!

It actually is possible to connect a inverter to any 12 V supply and run a limited amount of power for your home. Good to know in a emergency. I have done this twice and it works fine

I have done that with my 05 Prius several times. Have a limit of about 1000 watts though.

Yes, the inverter I have is only 1 Kw, but it's only for a emergency. Things like Refrigerator,TV your computer or cell phone.

Should anybody want to try this, be sure to disable the Master CB. Remember, you are simulating a Power out condition. You don't want to burn out anything.

True. Momentary watts that can be drawn depends on the inverter spec but the amount of power that can be used is limited to the 12v battery capacity of course. Unless you have the car in Ready mode. But then you are still limited to the power of the car's 12 battery charger. So I was referring to using the traction battery power which would be a whole lot more useful.

Also higher power inverters are not cheap here in the UK.

Do you have the specs and the schematic for that type of hookup?

The inverter can.t deliver more power than the 12v battery can supply. *Both* are limitations.

A 1kw inverter can deliver 1kw obviously, but for example a standard 12v 45ah battery couldn't deliver 1kw for very long.

The amount of usable energy needs a time element, hence energy is measured in kwh not just kw.

I think it was the traction battery cooler that did it. Today it was 98° o_O and I aired out the car for a few minutes. I had 1.7 EV miles left after AM commute and it lasted the full 1.7 miles. :)

We are somehow speaking apples and oranges. The car put in ready = initial power for the traction batteries to keep the 12 V battery charged. The 12 V battery drives the inverter. The Prius has a excellent duty cycle, some have done this this as a extended test and have said it work for about 48 hours. The Prime may be even better as a emergency home power device.

Not total garbage. I'm sure a good number of people were chuckling, so it accomplished it's goal.

What i was saying was that it depends on the ability of the car's 12v battery charger to cope with whatever the demand from the inverter is, if the Car is in Ready mode, and if it is not in Ready mode or the demand outstrips what the Prius battery charger can supply, then what you can draw from the inverter is then limited by the capacity of the 12v battery. That's what I was saying but expanded a little to try to ensure max clarity.

To unlock the full potential of the car as a home power backup, folk have tapped directly into the PiPs traction battery and could do the same with the Prime. But that is not what I was talking about.

Well, the house puts the demand or load on the inverter, the user knows the capacity of the inverter. The Traction Pack stays charged by being in ready, the engine runs automatically when required for keeping the 12V battery charged. The Prime is even more suited to this sort of Emergency connection than the previous models. The 12V battery doesn't cope, the 12V charge is always there and tapped off the traction battery. If the car is working properly everything is automatic. Of course the user should never overload the inverter. That goes without saying. Even the grid can be overloaded, I suppose that's the reason for Marijuana operation FIRES.

You're missing a key part of the above statement, that being the amount of current the car can provide to the 12V battery to keep it charged. It's not unlimited, it's limited by the power supply that supplies that power from the traction battery. Indications are the Prime has the same or similar limit as Prius has always had in this regard - 100A. Beyond that, you're draining the stored charge in the 12V battery.

Hey guys... the home power discussion isn't germane to the topic...EV distance with a Prime.

    Cool info, though!

we were discussing only a 1000 Watt inverter, is highly unlikely that anybody would be drawing 100 amperes.

The subject could be very "Hot" if all or a large portion of the grid were knocked out. The word WAR is being used more and more, sometimes with nuclear. Inverters would be unobtainable, as well as gasoline.

Sounds like it should be it's own thread.
