I am an electrical engineer and use ESD bags in my work to protect circuit boards from ESD damage. There are basically two types of ESD bags, pink ones that won't generate a static charge but don't block RF, dark grey ones that are still translucent that protect against fields generated by ESD which are basically RF, so the latter may work. Aluminum foil would also probably work.

Unless Toyota changed how the SKS works since 2005, the answer is no.

If the fob signal is blocked, or its battery is dead, then it it possible, but that would likely lead to trouble unlocking and starting the car beforehand.

    Um, aluminum foil?

The bags they provide for FastTrak toll transponders are grey-translucent. Depending on how things are set up, on some roads, you have to put your transponder in this bag if you have the clean-air decals, or else you will be charged. Other roads use the passenger count switch on the transponder, and you set it to two or three if you have the decals. Some bridges/roads honor the decals, some don't, and there is no signage to tell you how the clean-air decals work on a particular bridge/road. You just have to know that a particular bridge/road is operated under a particular rule category, and then you have to know how the decals are treated by that category. For example, the Golden Gate Bridge honors the white decals for carpool toll, but not the green decals. Other Bay Area bridges are operated by another authority, and have different rules.

So, I'm waiting for someone to invent multi-car fobs. In olden days, a ring of keys would have keys to all the cars in the family fleet. I carried one key ring, my Mrs. carried one, and if we had need to switch cars when we were out, no problem. Now with the new improved fobs we both need to be cluttered with two lumpy heavy hunks instead of thin brass keys for a car swap to take place. Ain't progress wonderful....

You could put fingerprints lock on the apps. Unless someone steal your fingerprint.

Since Prius Prime comes with touch screen, there is no reason that Toyota can not come with finger print scan like smartphone. So owner can program it then no keyfob is required to start however you still need it to open the car door.

It will take more than a smartphone app. It will require the SKS and the phone to be able to communicate on the same band. Right now, they don't.

The manual says if the key is detected as being outside the car, for example, if you left the key on the car dash(potential dead zone), the car might think the key is outside the vehicle and lock. I read that in the manual today.

Hmmm The Gen 4 Liftback just beeps, not locks.
I sometimes stop on the way home to check our mailbox. I just use Park & Parking brake for that stop.

One of those stupid thoughts that you should never have just occurred to me while driving home in rush hour traffic today. What if, while you're driving (with the car on, obviously), you were to open your window and throw the key/fob out the window while you're driving on the freeway? Would the car come to a halt, or would you just be unable to start it again later on?
(Don't try this at home, kiddies...)

You would go till you turned it off. My dad did this with his keys kinda. He had them on a box beside his Prius in the garage and it was close enough the car turned on. He drove to home Depot and turned it off. My sister had to bring him his keys.

When I pulled into my driveway I had to get out of the car to open the gate while enigine is still running. Of course I put into P. Then I got back into my car and drive in. Engine never stalled while I was out of the car.

At some time, sooner or later, many drivers will have this happen in a slightly different form -- the key fob battery dies. Same result.

It would be a serious safety problem if the car suddenly halted in heavy high speed traffic. So it doesn't halt, just gives a warning that the fob is no longer recognized.

Long before that the dash gives you repeated warning that the FOB battery runs low (at least with the PiP) though there are possibly people who ignore it...
