What is this noise?

    Hello all. Just bought my first prius. Trying to figure this noise out. It only happens over bumps/ pot holes. And only on the left side.

    Car drove ok before all my repairs, but made this noise.

    Looks like as if one of the wheel may have come off while the car was moving. Two of the bolts on the ball joint were scrapped down about 1/3 of a inch.

    2006 (260k). New rims, New tires w/alignment, struts, shocks, brakes pads, both tie rod ends, shocks/struts, both wheel bearings and ball joints. Also replaced the oil pan and gasket, but don't think that would have anything to do with the noise.

    I don't know about the noise but you don't seem to have any dash lights. That's usually a bad combination meter

    Get the front end up off the ground and start trying to find the violating component. Control arm or control arm bushings are a potential candidate.

    Yea, check your control arm bushing, as well as the bolts around the suspension area.. something is loose.

    Dang. Just got an alignment. How hard is it to replace the control arm? Never done one.

    Very hard. Lots of disassembling, and would require an alignment afterwards. Must use oem Lcas which are expensive requires 2.

    Harder then the wheel bearing? I'm not sure if it's the control arm bushings. I grabbed that rotor and couldn't move it at all. Grabbed everything I could and it was tight.

    Just wonder why do I need to use oem lower control arms? Fit issues? Rock auto has some moog lower control arms for about 40 dollars shipped each. I am new here guys so if there is a known issue, please let me know. Thanks for all your help guys.

    This only happens, over uneven roads. Or bumps/pot holes. And only on the lower left hand side.

    At any other time, slow or highways speeds, there are no issues.

    During braking or acceleration, there are no noises. I'm not sure if I made that clear.

    I did take it to Toyota for the recall on the steering shaft.

    Looks like silicone or atf fluid is a better route.

    Just tried silicone on the bushings. No help. Same noise

    FWIW my 260k 2006 Prius is having the identical issue. Somewhere along the line I'd attributed it to a worn strut, but since yours is new, that may narrow it down for me. It happens on "corrugated" dirt roads a lot. Hoping someone recognizes the sound and identifies it.

    Funny. I lubbed up the control arm. Not only did it NOT make the noise stop. I can now hear the control arms bushings rubbing in turns. They were totally silent before.

    Anybody think it could be the steering shaft vibrating? That's the only thing I didn't check. Totally feel it in the steering wheel.

    Non oem stab links are really noisey and require constant tightening especially if there moog
    Which Is the worst Chinese crap ever. Moog used to be very high quality. Not anymore.
    Years ago I bought some moog stab links from rock and the threads were ridiculous. I called rock and they told me to throw them in the garbage they didn't even want them back.
    I swore off non oem suspensions parts from there on out. In the long run your better off.
