…in the interest of enlightening such ignoramuses such as I, what is TSSP? (Can't find it on wiki! …well, google returns all manner of fluff & nonsense, but I don't have a large enough shovel just at the moment!) ;)

I pulled this explanation of TSS-P from the 2017 Prius brochure.

The road can be unpredictable. That’s why every new 2017 Prius comes
standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P). This active safety package
combines Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD),
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Automatic High
Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) to
assist you. TSS-P’s comprehensive features create in-the-moment safety
designed to support your awareness and decision-making on the road

    From https://www.toyota.com/prius/ebrochure

@Tideland Prius needs to add this term to the PriusChat Glossary.

…ah! Many thanks for explanation! (…it's always good to learn at least one new thing each day!) I do not know about the auto high-beams, though - I'd put that in the same category as "auto-dimming rear-view mirror" and "dental-floss-holders" and other such gewgaws! o_O Thanks for the enlightenment! ;)

The auto high beams work quite well on country roads at night with occasional oncoming traffic. They do not work so well on the highway but I do not use high beams there anyway..
The auto switch can be turned off and they function just like ordinary high beams.

Sorry, I neglected to put the "-" in TSS-P. Toyota Safety Sense - Pedestrian. The features in this system may someday prevent an accident, save my life or another life.

    All that being true...
It still doesn't mean the crack in your windshield is Toyota's fault or responsibility.

Advances in technology often lead to things becoming more expensive to maintain, repair or replace. That's the cost of the benefit, and the advancement.

When everyone had metal key's, and turn key ignitions...losing your key was a pretty cheap reality.
Today? Lose or break a Smart Key System Fob, and resolution for that issue is far more complicated and expensive.

I have no doubt TSS-P is making your windshield replacement more expensive and more difficult. I wish you the best of luck in both finding resolution and getting assistance.
I agree that if Toyota is going to offer this technology, they should simultaneously offer tangible support in repair and replacement as it inevitably become something their customers will need to do.

I'm still not convinced however, that Toyota "owes" you discounted or bargain replacement. If they assist? That's nice.

If TSS-P is not physically part of the windshield? I don't understand why separate sensors would have to be recalibrated? Do these sensors read through the window?

There is a TSS-P camera behind the rear view mirror that reads through the windshield.

Wow. 13 pages on my phone for this thread. Read/scans all.

A rock hit my 06 Prius two months after purchase. Big rock. Marble-sized-plus. Saw it coming, bouncing its merry way. Invisible no-cost (to me) repair by Safelite hasn't failed.

Another rock hit it in 2016. Bigger repair required. Safelite said they'd guarantee it permanent but that it would be somewhat visible. It was in line of sight and windshield was badly pitted, so I opted for new one. Cost $100. Farmers Insurance.

    Nothing ever scratched the windshields.

BUT my 5-month-old 2017 Four's windshield has a three-inch scratch caused by the wipers dragging some piece of abrasive-enough material across it for the duration of ONE rainstorm. (Or maybe it was already there, but less visible.) But I'm pretty observant. And OCD.

So I went to Safelite, who told me "new windshield". Farmers will replace it for $100, but want Safelite to do it. I wondered, with all the stuff connected to the windshield (TSS-P), shouldn't Toyota do it?

After reading all the stuff in this thread,
I'm not sure I want ANYBODY doing it. Yes, it's annoying, but what will or won't work and/or be warranted, etc. post-repair?

Today I'm having a hard time seeing the scratch. No joke.

P.S. Why on earth can't a scratch be repaired?

I figured it had to be something like that.
I will admit, to have that re-calibrated at a cost of 5 hours of labor at $180 an hour, would upset me.
And if that's automatic anytime you have the windshield replaced with this feature....Toyota has to find a way to lower the cost.

My Toyota dealership will call in Safelite (or another glass company) to replace windshields at the dealership. If additional work is required to sensors or vehicle systems, Toyota will do these repairs.

Just as a point of data here, I have had 2 broken windshields now and have yet to have the camera alignment done. Each windshield was replaced by a Toyota windshield and the work was done by the local Safelite shop. With the last windshield replacement I was given a certificate from the glass company/insurance that would cover the cost of the camera alignment. When I scheduled the 10,000 mile checkup I added that to the list of items. When I picked up the car, the tech said that as long as there is not an error code showing an issue there is no need to realign the cameras after replacing a windshield, so they hadn't done it. The car is a 4 touring with all the toys on it, and haven't had any issues with DRCC, Auto headlights, auto wipers, or anything else controlled by the multiple cameras on the windshield.

The technician is mistaken. Toyota’s service publications make it clear that the camera learning procedure must be done whenever the windshield glass is replaced:
    • In the Repair Manual (RM3200U), under “Engine / Hybrid System: Cruise Control: Front Camera: Installation,” Toyota writes, “If the forward recognition camera has been replaced with a new one or the windshield glass has been removed and installed, it is necessary to perform Forward Recognition Camera Learning.”
    • In the Collision Repair Manual (BM3200U), under “Procedures Necessary When ECU or Other Parts Are Replaced,” “Adjust forward recognition camera” is listed as a necessary procedure when the windshield glass is replaced.
As I wrote in a previous thread, the procedure is time-consuming and potentially disruptive to other activity in the workshop because of the space required, so it’s understandable that a dealer might not want to do it, but that doesn’t excuse providing misinformation.

I can hear the mechanic screaming "what kind of :mad:engineer designed..." echoing from the dealership.

Well my windshield has been replaced, and a Toyota dealer recalibrated the TSS-P sensor. It seems to be working fine. The bill was $900 :eek::eek: which I paid and submitted to my insurance company. Seems like a big rip off. Maybe in the future as more toyotas have these features the procedure will be simplified and the price will go down.

I was quoted 5 hours at $180/hr. tucatz got rather upset, so Toyota is investigating the replacement as a good will gesture.

Was the $900 for just the recalibration, or did that include the window, too?

You said that Toyota was investigating the replacement as a good will gesture. Did anything come of that?

What I am really most interested in is whether or not recalibration is considered part of window replacement by insurance companies (edit: windshield replacement used to be covered with zero deductible under all comprehensive insurance policies issued in my state, but Google tells me even that changed years ago).

$900 was for the recalibration only. I'm sure the dealer spent 5 hours on this. :cautious: But I submitted the bill to my insurance company and they paid me back without question. I have $300 deductible on the windshield. I pay. I do not know the total glass cost, installed

Toyota offered me $690, which could have been applied toward the recalibration. I chose to pay myself, and they in turn are promising me a credit, minus the rental car fee, towards future parts and service. We'll see if this actually happens. Toyota was nice enough about it. Plus my incident goes in the records. I was told to keep all paperwork in case there is a recall. But after all my squawking it made me unhappy, made the dealer unhappy, and in the end don't know if it helped tucatz.
