the leather like material is coming apart. is there a way to replace only the cover?

See the arrow mark in the image below. It's coming apart at the seams.

I googled online and saw this replacement cover on Amazon(link here)

Can I just buy this and replace the cover? I see it comes with a blank key and am hoping I can use the current one.

I purchased 4 new covers (~$7 each on ebay) similar to what you're talking about and swapped my fob internals into them. Same reason, the rubber covers were just worn. They work great. One was a bit tight on the buttons, but it loosened up after a couple days. Just remember the electronics board/battery is on one side of the fob, but there is also an RFID chip on the other half that needs to be swapped, otherwise the fob will not work in the dash slot. The last thing anyone needs is to be in a jam because the battery in the fob died, and then the fob has no RFID chip. The RFID just looks like a small chunk of metal wedged into the plastic near the bottom.

so, is the change simple or easy DIY for a newbie ?

I have never replaced the covers before but I have replaced the battery when it died down few months ago but that's about it.

If you've replaced the battery then you should be able to do it just fine. Just be careful when removing the circuit board. I'm sure there's a you-tube video out there somewhere that shows it. You'll need to pry the two halves of the fob apart, just be careful.
