Early report: GOP baseball shooting: Lawmaker Scalise wounded, one person in custody - The Washington Post

A gunman opened fire Wednesday morning on a baseball practice at a park in Alexandria involving Republican members of Congress, injuring several people including at least one lawmaker, Steve Scalise, the majority whip, according to police and a congressman.

Alexandria police would confirm only that a shooting at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park had occurred and that one person was in custody.

ps. If someone shoots up a bunch of politicians, does it belong in Fred's House of Politics?

    I know this will start a fire-storm ....... but

All the political rhetoric and hatred must stop. The woman holding the bloody head for example. Hollywood kooks rushing to support her in her hour of fame. The only reason I voted for Trump is because so many said they would leave the country if he won ... but they are still here preaching their hatred.

I have stopped watching the news on TV ... I have found that there is absolutely nothing good reported, and all is does is keep me "churning" and upset. I'm betting that the shooter was "intoxicated" by all the hate and venom served daily by the media.

But alas .... politicians will never let a disaster go to waste without trying to make their point. Enough!!

The suspect is now dead. I hope this doesn't turn out like the Israeli case of a perp captured alive and uninjured, then the body later returned to the family, having expired of injuries during capture. (In that case, the journalist who took and published the pre-injury photos was imprisoned.)

According to the NYT, he is an Illinois man, Bernie volunteer, and member of multiple strongly anti-Republican and anti-Trump groups. Bernie has already denounced the shooting.

In order to help deny infamy or notoriety, I will not name the suspect.

Just sharing with @Felt that I felt the same about the shooting victims here as I did about Sandy Hook. Everyone is someone's child.

We had a thread about news sources that pointed out one side is relatively monolithic and the other seeks multiple sources. Both recognize that there will always be errors BUT the errors are not relocated across multiple sources.

I understand the shooter died. Hopefully no one else.

Someone will complain and it will get moved, I'm sure.

    +1

I do not count the shooter as a 'victim', even though he also is somebody's loved one.
That's a blemish on MY character.

    BRAVO-ZULU to the DC Police!!

Scalise's condition being variously reported as critical and stable in media I see. These are quite not the same, can anyone clarify?

Surely I speak for other readers here in wishing the best for all those bulleted. Except for the perp of course.

The terms refer to two different things. One is the level of the patient's condition. The other on their chances of getting worse. Being critically injured is bad, but being stable means all the immediate problems are addressed, and their vital signs are holding steady. There are always unknowns, but they should recover with time and care.

My understanding is the bullet fractured on bone and then there are all those intestinal parts that have an abundance of gut bacteria. More surgeries have been announced.

    Source?
As for this shooter, I didn't know the man and think of him just like any other attempted or real mass killer. But as someone pointed out, the bill to make silencers an over the counter item silently died in committee.

What would be an adequate source for you? Doesn't matter what the counter is when the other has his/her head deep in the sand.

Guns and silencers don't kill people, people kill people. Perhaps they make it a little easier but if they are not available something else will be. Knives? Vans? It won't matter (source: see UK). It is a heart issue.

Good point about a source: GOP Goes Quiet on Gun Silencers—for Now, at Least—After Congressional Shooting

. . . Yesterday a bill (the Hearing Protection Act!) that would allow silencers—those things that criminals use in the movies, and which are presently regulated more like machine guns than revolvers—was set for a hearing before the House Natural Resources Committee. It was canceled even before the leadership shut the entire House down for the day.

A wise move. Even if Republicans use their inside voices and talk nice, going on about the woes of hunters without silencers when it was the very sound of gunfire that allowed others at that field to run for cover, and for the Capitol Police to move to where the shots were coming from, would be particularly hard to take. Yes, perhaps we can be made to worry over the health of your ears and that of your hunting dogs. Just not today.

Actually I did a little research and the best approach would be one of the .45 APC chambered semi-automatics like the KRISS, Vector series:
    • subsonic bullets - so there is no crack
    • large bullet mass - significant stopping power regardless of travel
    • low muzzle - reduces climb with each round
    • excellent rail - supports advanced optics
My second choice would be .22 hollow point, survival rifle and/or Browning semi. Low recoil and the hollow point ensures all the energy and bullet fragments in the targets.

Much as other people seem pretty determined to drag this thread into FHoPolitics, I won't. Instead, I'll respond to a few issues on here in the gun thread that's in Politics already.

This is the key thing I'll disagree with on the other thread.

    This is the other.

Link to come in a few minutes.

    ........
