EV range in real world?

    IMG_7756.PNG I bought my Prime about 4 weeks ago. Initially, I was getting 18 miles electric per charge. After driving the car now in eco mode and following the eco guide (or whatever it's called), I am getting 33-34 miles per charge in city driving and around 25 on highways. Also, 70+ in a city and high 50s on a highway in a hybrid mode, once the traction battery has depleted. All in eco mode and eco driving style, NOT hypermiling. In addition, all electric POWER mode is a beast. I have no idea what mode they use when measuring 0 to whatever times, but it pulls like a train from a stop. Including a screen shot from my current charge, waiting for tomorrow commute.

    PS. I do keep the climate control turned off most of the time, but my seat and steering wheel heaters are turned on and music blasting.

    46-65 F, I drive 60 mph on Hwy. my wife drives 65 mph on Hwy. Eco score has improved from 71 in November to 91 in January. 1486273394133.jpg

    I am really confused by all the Prime's screens (and entune reports) with partial info, but none of them give's full report of a trip or of the period since last reset, like the EV ratio screens in the PiP.
    Some here reported that the Prime calculates EV miles driven differently than PiP: miles with no ICE in HV mode are tracked down as EV miles! (like when slowing, braking, downhill etc.)
    If this is true then only if the trip (or the period) was all in EV mode the report of EV miles driven is 'grid miles' (what EPA calls AER) but if HV mode was selected while you still have EV range then you report includes a portion of EV miles that are ICE generated, isn't it?
    So, unless the car was driven in EV mode all the time in the period reported, reports here are inconsistent IMO.

    Thanks for sharing. I am driving in 30s and 40s here. Can't wait for warmer temperatures to see if I can squeeze over 35 from a charge.

    Can you elaborate on your driving conditions/style prior to the last charge you show in post #61?
    Speeds, traffic, terrain etc. Did you drive EV mode all the time? Or switched manually to HV mode from time to time?

    I am still tinkering with ways to drive more efficiently. Here is my routine. My commute to work is exactly 25 miles. 15 highway and 10 city (although higher speeds up to 50 at times). First, I was driving fully electric one way and then I'd have 4-5 miles before the engine kicked in on my return trip. My combined economy for that day was around 123. Then, I tried to drive electric in the city and force the Prime into HV on highways. My economy jumped to 146. So, that's what I doing now.

    Terrain is mixed. Nothing extreme. Traffic is moderate. I learned to love traffic, as my speeds on highways are slower and I can use more of the electric mode, increasing efficiency.

    according to ukr2, even though hv/ev miles are reported as engine running/not running, hv with no wall charge reports accurate mpg's for total miles travelled.

    Yes, true when EV depleted and automatic switch to HV. But when manually switching to HV while there is still EV range - no ICE miles are tracked as EV miles while these are not grid EV miles but rather ICE generated EV miles and you are paying them by HV only mpg. That is my understanding.
    I suspect that even after EV depleted HV mode, if you have a long enough downhill so EV range is reappearing, those miles are also counted as EV!

    That is why I said that those Entune charging reports showing expected EV range are inconsistent as we do not know the 'portion' of ICE generated EV miles in them due to past HV mode.

    I see what you are saying. It's outside of my routine, but I tested that theory (a while back, when my estimated EV range was around 26). I drove strictly around at city speeds, taking care of some chores and driving kids to different activities. I started with projected 26 miles electric and ended up putting on almost 30. All EV, all city.

    Don't misunderstand me, I am not saying your driving routine for the commute is wrong, it is probably the best for your situation. I only say that the expected EV range you are getting cannot compare to others due to the amount of HV mode involved in each case.

    I might make some Volt owners jealous.

    I wake up to ~40.6 miles EV range now...

    And I got a new record for the day: 98.2 miles for 195.8 MPG and 49.1 miles at 199.9 MPG, Charges on both sides (to work and back) AND mixed highway driving (55-60 MPH). Probably 60% highway.

    Three weeks in, I'm getting at least 31 miles most days from one charge, and that's with the AC on, and with room for improvement in eco score. So I know I can do better.

    I come down a long hill on my morning commute, which gives me a couple extra miles.

    I'm happy with 24-25 miles of EV range w/AC. In the morning I'm easily getting over this amount because a 19.1 mile trip that is downhill will leave me with 14+ miles of range left. But going home which is skewed because of hills and longer freeway drive because of Grandpa duty, I use all of my EV range, and about 10 miles of HV mode. I'm not complaining, but I am jealous that you guys can be so ECO minded.

    I guess I'm also guilty of faster driving, because I'm in the carpool lane in the afternoon and there is no way in heck I'm going to slow every one down by driving 65 MPH, There would be a lot of pissed off people behind me, and I know I wouldn't want to be behind someone driving that slow in the "fast" lane. It's obvious that driving faster eats up EV miles much quicker. So I've switched my strategy to driving in HV mode for that stretch of the highway, then switch to EV when I'm on the streets or back roads.

    One thing I really like about the Prime is all the info you can customize on the display. You can really see what your foot's doing to the EV range and MPG when it switches to that mode. Seeing as I'm coming from a Gen 3 it's nice to see that screen is available by the speedometer as a split screen.

    What exactly is the EV range shown on the display? Is it the actual range achieved since the last charge?

    Healthy competition here!

    The range is a "smart" range, ie it's more of an average since EV calculations started. So initially I think Toyota sets it at 25. Then depending if you're heavy footed or not it'll adjust the range to be more reliable to you as the driver.
