I just go to Midas and have the oil changed, tires rotated, inspection done for about $39.00. I went to the dealer only once - for a free service update.

The only reason to do the 30k service is that the car has never seen a "professional" and we are about to embark on a 7000 mile trip next week. Just seemed like a good time to get it looked at.

The answer to that would be no!

You will be passing very close to my neck of the woods. I may have to give you a good pep talk on car maintenance

Ya gotta protect yourself. If you saunter, waltz, or sashay in and say "gimme yer 30K service", you'll get serviced alright.

Take the Scheduled Maintenance Guide with you. Show the appropriate page to the service writer. Tell them to do those things and nothing else. If you get quoted a lot more than $80, leave. (Save even more by not rotating the tires.) If you provide the oil, three quarts even, then you know they won't overfill it, and they should reduce the price.

I stopped and chatted with my good independent shop owner this afternoon. I showed him the invoice and he laughed,,, "that's what they do!" Then he showed me an invoice from another independent and it was twice as much,,,, so I guess it is caveat emptor!

I don't worry about me,,, I went in with my eyes open,,, but rather the innocent (my wife for example) who wouldn't know if she were being sold a bill of goods or not. As my independent friend said,,, it gives all shops a bad name,,, and car repair shops,, even the good, honest ones have a bad enough one already.

okay. this has been said many times but bears repeating:

going into a dealer shop and requesting the "30k service" is going to get you overserviced and overcharged over in short order.

Wish I saw this forum earlier. I got a 30K service done today at Toyota Sunnyvale. They charged me $900. I was shocked at how much it cost!

Yes it will. Paid $900 today for a regular 30k service in which they assured me this is a normal. Outrageous! Wish I saw this forum earlier.

Yes that sounds pretty extreme Daniel, even by Australian standards (and we tend to pay a lot more for most services here compared to the US).

I got stung many years ago for over $750 for my 80,000 km (50,000 miles) service by my local Toyota dealership. They had a list as long as your arm of things they claimed to have done (even including changing the in tank fuel filter), but when I looked closely I doubt that they actually did anything except change the oil and filters.

To be honest it was probably a good thing that they stung me back then, because it made me tear up their 2nd hand car warranty (which wasn't worth the paper that it was written on and which compelled me to do ALL the servicing with only that dealer) and take over all the servicing myself.

That was at 80,000 km and I'm now at 310,000 km. The car has run perfectly over that time, and only ever needed basic routine maintenance, and no joking I would have saved myself at least $8,000 in servicing costs over that time. :)
