 i took my prius in yesterday for its first oil change to the dealer i bought it from. any way they said that the tires should be rotated at 5000 miles cause the batteries under the back seat cause the tires in back to slightly wear a little more. so i really could not see any difference by looking at them. so i figured toyota knows best. all i said was this. when you do rotate the tires please be careful not to put any scratches or knicks in the rims . they assured me that they do this everyday for a living and nothing was going to happen! when they brought the car around after they had finished their oil change they said on one of your rims while we were rotating the tires the impact wrench socket happen to brake and as a result of this you now have 3 generous gouges in one of your rims.anyways they said that they would replace the rim but it just ticks me off when it seems when you do get a new car someone else always puts scratches and whatever on it. anyways i feel better now i shared this with you guys. pete ;)

Well, that's not the reason why you rotate your tires at 5,000 miles, but in any case, the Scheduled Maintenance Guide says you should rotate them at that point.

Sucks about your rim, but accidents happen, I guess.

I take mine in for the 5000 mile check tomorrow. With any luck I won't have any dealer stunts pulled on me.

 Pete has re-made the case to:

ALWAYS inspect your car BEFORE leaving it for service noting any significant dents, etc. ...

AND before driving it away AFTER the service has been completed.

Pete is fortunate that the Dealer accepted responsibility for the damage and is replacing the rim without arguement. Sounds like that air wrench torque setting was too high which, in itself, could cause fine cracks in the alloy wheel. The tire folks I have used for years do the final torqueing by hand with a torque wrench.
