The technology is a better fit for me as I have an Android phone and I believe the Prius only support iPhone fully at this time.

Mr. Zardoz, my Prime does support Android phones very well, as does my son's 2015 Prius.

I almost got an ioniq as well. The interior quality was great and it looks ok too.

    Cons though:

I hated the instrument cluster (if it’s lcd why do I have to change it to sport in order to get a digital speedo?).
The steering felt numb and disconnected.
Steering wheel was flat bottomed which doesn’t make sense when you have to rotate the wheel multiple times to turn the car. The bump just is fatiguing your hand.
Dual clutch on a hybrid is an asinine combination.

Bottom line: The car felt faster than a Prius but they just don’t get the hybrid part of the car. They made it too much like a normal car so if it isn’t telling you everywhere how well you’re driving or what your mpg is, then the car just becomes a boring car. Whereas the Prius is a boring car that distracts you with economy data.

Electric motor is placed between engine an transmission, this means that it shifts gears even in EV mode and motor can't do anything to soften those shifts.

Honda also has a DCT with their one motor hybrid system in the Jazz/Fit.
A DCT can be more efficient than the standard step automatic.
Hyundai's system is supposedly more torque efficient than Toyota's. A parallel hybrid might be cheaper to make than a power-split one.

Thanks for setting me straight! I don't know where I got the bogus info that only iPhones were supported for the advanced integration.

Most infotainment systems have fine print about them not supporting all Andriod phones.

I did some additional homework. My issue was the lack of integration due to Toyota's refusal to adapt Android Auto. As such Google maps from your cell phone will not appear on the touchscreen etc.

the first 1000-1500 miles the gearbox is learning, which can result in slightly rougher shifts, it does note this in the manual

there are definitely some quirks on the DCT that need a software update to fix, but I am nearly at 19,000 miles since November, 2nd service booked for about 3 weeks time, I have raised a query about my DCT to be investigated as with a very specific set of circumstances it takes longer to shift from 5th to 4th, certain it is a software issue, but raised it to get it logged to hopefully help push a software update

yep the lack of ability to "customise" the central display is one of the most often commented on negatives over on the ioniqforum, it would be a simple coding fix to my mind

many like the flat bottom steering wheel as it is seen as "sporty", personally I find it neither good or annoying but some it does put off

the full EV don't have the DCT as no need for it,

but the choice of DCT for the hybrid and plugin is more about efficiency and drivability without the issue of the engine racing as with the CVT which many non hybrid drivers see as a negative

it allows for no loss due to torque convertor losses, with the additional clutch between the ICE and electric motor it allow the ICE to be totally disconnected from the drivetrain when running in EV mode, as well as allowing the car to move from standstill on electric only then bring the ICE in once the car is moving so it removes the judder common to moving off in DCT cars, this also reduces wear on the DCT clutches as there is little slip for the clutches to absorb as the electric motor can spin the input shaft to the right rpm before the clutch engages

So I sat down once and did a quick comparison of the Ioniq vs the Prius, based on some online articles - tried to score each car and see which would have the highest score, they are close, but looks like Ioniq wins by a little, mainly thanks to slightly more power, slightly better MPG and pricing ... my score is NOT SCIENTIFIC, it's just my own idea of how to compare two cars ... in each category, I can award a maximum of 3 points (depending how important a category is) and I gave either the Prius or the Ioniq between 1 and 3 points for each "win" and then just tallied up....

Does the prime still have to move the engine in ev mode? I feel like that’s a potential waste of energy.

Just found my answer. I wonder if this helps in hybrid efficiency as well.

Just an FYI, Hyundai's new car warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles not 10 years/100,000 (which is what you're comparing to the 3 years/36,000 miles for the Prius.

For my mind, extremely important is the HISTORY of the car. The Prius has a VERY strong favorable history, while the Hyundai does have some stains in its history, including some false mileage claims. Consumer Reports has rated Prius as the #1 reliable automobile.

Please do not take this as personal as much as what would come out in a formal debriefing. Having spent most of my career working government contracts on the contractor side, the debriefing for my first job reversed the award (someone on the source evaluation committee made a math error) and we won the contract.

Usually the government issues a Request For Quote and allows the bidders to ask questions. So seeing two "MPG" requirements, a fair question is 'which is more important?' Writing the RFQ, there would be only one MPG requirement, the EPA, and the 'actual' used to validate the EPA ranking. In your example, MPG was double-booked.

In NASA (i.e., government contracting,) each optional criteria would be assigned a weighted value and then the source selection board would tally up the value of each option. So something like 'Apple/Android play' would have a different value, a weighting, than say 'Safety equipment' so each would have a relative evaluation. The value needs to relate to the mission so someone who is constantly getting destinations like a taxi/Uber might consider 'Apple/Android' a higher value than those who just want to play their tunes on long distance trips.

We would also identify mandatory items first because they can impact other configuration items. For example, in our family TSS-P is mandatory but when the equivalent is included in the Ioniq, the optional price changes. Given it would be a special order, the price effect and delay could be significant.

This is part of something called "System Engineering." Since everyone's eyes are glazed over, we'll leave it for now.

I called a Hyundai dealer asking to test drive Ioniq a few month ago, but they didn't have in stock then. I did not pursue further. I did not even look at its price for comparison to Prime before I picked Prime Premium two days ago before Toyota's huge discount expire. Is the price for Ioniq plug in known now? I just looked Hyundai site, they have 2017 Ioniq HV starting from $22K and EV from $29K, but no plug-in yet. If it's going to be out for 2018, then it would be in between HV and EV at around $25K. Unless Hyundai offers similar huge discount like Toyota, the price of Prime Premium may be better than starting price of Ioniq.

    Won't the discount continue?

The Ioniq Plug-in would have been an option for me if it weren't for the timing ...
Wife's car is a Sonata Hybrid and it is quite impressive, cheaper than my Gen3 2, better comfort, ride and the mileage is approaching 10-15% lower than the Gen3 Prius (compared on my commute). I went to a dealer to look at the hybrid Ioniq, certainly the rear is roomier compared to the Prime and supposedly the plug-in has same room in rear as the hybrid. cockpit is somewhat boring, but, it has CarPlay/Android?? ... once the plug-in is actually available, shall be interesting

What do you mean, delay? (for those of us who weren't following this thread closely.
