My daughter (age 23) purchased a 2014 Prius C-2. The third day she owned it she took a turn too close exiting a driveway bordered with large stones, and deeply scraped both doors against some rocks in in a driveway.

    Boy is she upset!

It looks to me like both passenger doors will need to be replaced, as well as the piece that runs under the doors and up behind them (I'll post a picture when I have access to the car, probably later today).

I would describe this accident as roughly the equivalent of someone driving into the passenger side of the car at 10 MPH.

I wondering what this will cost to repair (2 doors), and where to go around Boston (western suburbs) to get it fixed. Boch Toyota in Norwood is obvious choice, but is there something better/less expensive?

    What's your insurance like?

Personally, I just insurance up, with collision/comprehensive, take my annual financial hit, and when stuff like this happens, take it to pros.

    welcome!

hard to say without pics. both could be expensive. if she's paying for it herself, have her call the insurance company for a list of approved body shoppes.

I'm assuming that this will crank her insurance up so high that it's better to self-pay.

Talk to the insurer, find out: what's your deductable, what's going to happen to your premiums, and so on.

My 2 cents: if I've got insurance, I'm gonna use it, unless it's something completely trivial. And this doesn't sound trivial.

Doors can be a bear, misalignment of hinges, hard to close post-repair, and on and on. Maybe replacement is not necessary??

Do you have a regular body shop? Everyone should: just like a regular dentist, lol.

To second @bisco: post some pictures if possible.

insurance may be different down here, not sure. it's absolutely worth asking. they can specify surcharges, lost good drivers discounts and higher rates, and for how long. but you need some repair estimates to compare to.

Doors aren't bad or that hard to replace. As mentioned, alignment is a major issue, but it's not too difficult.
Door sills and quarter-panels however... that requires patch replacements which comes in the form of welding and painting... that will add up in price very quickly. I would recommend finding out about the insurance, if your deductible is lower than $1000, you'll be winning as I guarantee this will cost more than that to fix, "correctly".

Unless insurance is going to pay for it, forget having Toyota fix this.

My daughter had a "dent" in a front fender at a seam; no missing or scratched paint, just a dimple where something pushed on it.
Toyota wanted about $1800 for a new fender, including labor.

A well recommended local body shop said:
Even if we replace the whole fender and paint it, the cost would be about half what Toyota quoted you.
From looking at it, there is a fair chance that we can "push" the dent back out and nobody but you will ever know it was there.
They did that. Can't tell it. Cost: $50.

The daughter may be looking at two door skins and a rocker panel. Take the car to a few body shops to get quotes. Maybe the dealer's collision will be cheaper, maybe not. Maybe the dealer's shop will do a better job, maybe not.

The retail price may be higher than what the shop will accept from the insurance company.

Figure a week in the shop and the price of a rental.

I like the work done by the collision centers of Holman & Liberty Toyota and would recommend getting the rental from them as well.

The obvious lesson here is "don't park in the driveway" or at least don't park next to rocks. I have a friend that doesn't look at the back up camera and tends to steer right when backing up. Alternate space parking is the closest I'll park to her.

Wash the panels, tell her it won't look as bad tomorrow, and keep us posted.

Keep the door damage until she learns how to drive properly in that the rear turns sharper than the front. Without learning that lesson, you will spend $$$ and it will happen again.

Then call insurance and be done with it.

Getting a lot of rain up here, so will have to take pics tomorrow.

Door is not closing fully, so she can't drive the car in its current condition, 21KToaster, so while I'd like to take your advice, it appears to be inpractical :)

If the doors are replaced with used doors, don't forget that the replacement door locks will not match your existing physical key.

No. And I would be surprised if any of the models did.
There really is little point of having a cylinder in more than one door.......on any car with electric locks.

Gen 1 did. I know my Gen 3 liftback doesn't. But I wasn't sure about the c (since they were going for more of a conventional-car vibe, with the shifter and all).

My 4 does not have a passenger door key hole.
If the door won't shut then it's going to need a full replacement, most likely. That being said, if it's that bad, you've probably damaged the rocker panel at least. That's the expensive part. You're looking at over $1000 after painting the new parts and labor.

I'm old fashioned, I guess - I like to let my lady passenger in first before going 'round to the driver's door. Fortunately the remote unlock via the key buttons lets me do that.

So does the automatic door unlocks. I look like quite the gentleman when I grab her door handle for her and open the door. :D Little does she know that I'm really just unlocking the door.
