I have been extremely lucky with my 2004 Gen2 - 165,000 miles and just now getting triangle of death. I see old posts about code readers. And now I see $25 code cable with USB that looks like it just plugs into computer (and I assume running $25 copy of Toyota Techstream software). Has anyone tried that combination? Does it really work to identify bad battery module?

If you are talking about a mini VCI you should order it. Do you need a Windows laptop to run it on. the drivers like 32 bit operating systems. You will basically have a year old version of the Toyota factory diagnostic system which is called techstream.

32-bit Windows 10 can automatically recognize the cable. Hence no additional device driver installation is necessary. Latest TechStream is available on the web if you search around.
