    Hello,
    Newbie member here.
Been pre-owned Prius shopping for awhile now. Liked a 2012 PIP (91k miles) but $13,000 was uncomfortably pushing outside my budget.
Just looked at a 2013 Prius Gen 2 (I believe a Gen 2 - it lacked an EV button, has the touch display but no GPS or backup camera) with 110k miles for $9300. The Carfax report showed it had a fleet history (likely a rental?) then it went to auction last month (July). I believe fleet cars tend to get maintenance quite regularly.
The car looked pretty good. Interior seemed fine. Tires good. Bit dusty under the hood but nothing looked oily.
Since I've only driven about 4-5 Prius while on my search, this one seemed to drive ok.
Question- What should I be looking at on cars like this one? Any method to evaluate the batteries? Is it recommended to have my mechanic (or Toyota dealer shop) give it a once over?
Does that many miles in so few years play hard on the engine/motor and other aspects of the car?

OK, guess that is enough questions.
I truly appreciate any info you can share.
    Thank you.
    Russ

With that many miles I doubt it was a rental, more likely a company owned (salesman car). If it's had regular maintaince I wouldn't shy away from it if the price was right. I think closer to $8000 would be a good price. Put it in Kelly's blue book and see what it is for a private seller. I think the battery is more affected by time not miles. Make sure the battery state of charge indicator is pretty constant, no rapid up and down movements. You can't go wrong having a good mechanic look at it if they are familiar with a Prius.

Also if it's a 2013 it's a Gen.3 I've never seen one without an EV button, but I've never seen a package 1 car either. Could be a barebones package 1 car which would make it worth less. Make sure you are getting what you think your getting. This is the reason you should get it CHEAP.

@paprius4030 gave good advice. A fleet-registered car should cost less because it has the fewest features. Also, I'd double check the car and the year. 2nd generation Prius goes from 2004-2009 and the interior looks like this:

and a 3rd generation Prius is model year 2010-2015 and the interior looks like this:

If the car you're looking at is a 2nd gen Prius, then it is not a 2013 and someone is trying to lie to you.

Another thing to consider with fleet cars is many people will drive a fleet car worse than they would a personal car, so having a mechanic check out the car is more important.

It would be very helpful to do some detective work and determine what type of fleet this vehicle was in. If this was part of a taxi fleet, I'd probably steer clear. Fleet vehicles can be better maintained -- Avis/Hertz aren't going to rent cars with visual defects -- but they also could be worse maintained -- Avis/Hertz aren't going to bother fixing a hidden problem or perhaps even doing suggested maintenance knowing that the vehicle will be sold and thus spending money on longevity doesn't help their bottom line. Good luck!

Find and download the sales brochures for the model years you are looking at so you can determine what was included in the trim packages. Does the fleet vehicle qualify for the retail warranty?

Thank you all for your kind and helpful advice.
I realized I typed a mistake in referring to the trim level as Gen 2. It was early in the morning and I was rushing. I meant to type package/trim 2.
It is a Gen 3 model missing that "EV" button (likely due to it being a fleet model). The MIA button is not much of a big deal with me but not sure how the rest of this car compares to a package/trim 2 model.
I liked the idea of downloading the brochure to check the trim packages. Unfortunately the brochures I found did not include info for package/trim 1s. No idea how a fleet sale affects the warranty. Tho with that many miles (110k) I'm guessing that only the battery would still be covered (here in Calif)?.
It is unfortunate that the Carfax did not offer up more info. (see attached)

My nearest Toyota dealer can give the car a detailed look over for $130 (takes a few hours).
My trusty regular mechanic won't charge me but he likely doesn't have the propriety equipment Toyota has.

From the Carfax report, it looks like the previous owner did not do maintenance at a dealer where they report to Carfax. That can mean they maintained the car themselves, it can mean they took it to an independent mechanic, or it can mean maintenance was irregular or sporadically done.

Please let us know what you wind up doing. I'm really surprised there's no EV button. Has anybody here seen a Pkg. 1 car?

Battery is affected by miles too, This January I dropped a new battery at 186K miles in a 2013 Prius, $3,105 with tax. Here is the proof:

If you go to the Toyota website and punch in that vin it will pull all services done at any toyota dealer.

An update to my pre-owned Prius shopping. The car I mentioned here sold before I had enough free time to have it checked out.
I did enter the VIN on Toyota's site as suggested (thank you harrysprius) and it showed rather different info history than the Carfax.
It showed fairly regular maintenance. And there was a line in there regarding "Enterprise Fleet". Hmm.
Oh well, the Prius search continues.
Thank you all for your help and replies.
