Just purchased a 2006 Prius with SKS and a single FOB which was the non-SKS type (black logo). The key only worked in the dash and the lock/unlock buttons didn't work (new battery and little led on FOB blinks when pressed). Also, the red car icon with the key kept flashing when key was plugged in (2 blinks, pause, repeat...over and over). I had a veteran locksmith come in and he programmed a second non-SKS FOB (though I wanted an SKS one...I'll leave that aside for the moment). The light is now off when plugged in the dash, but the buttons on neither FOB work. He said the computer and FOBs are sync'd and that the issue must by a wire, antenna, or fuse. I checked all the fuses and even swapped some to be sure. I do not know how to check antenna or wires. What can I do? Is there an OBD code I should look for? Could what I hear called a "coil" antenna, be disconnected and so the car is not getting the signal? Thanks.

You should have gone to the dealer and got the right keyfob and programming for sks functions

I understand. But the basic lock/unlock buttons should work with a non-SKS FOB. Could it be an antenna issue? The guy has being working car locks for 16 years, and Prius's many times. I can assume he is being dishonest, but I'd like to trust his diagnosis long enough to check it out. He also indicated both these new SKS-FOBs are masters and that his software is telling him the cars are FOB are sync'd.

Could it be an antenna issue...where is the antenna located? How can I narrow down the options before going to a dealer?

I don't think your locksmith guy is as good as you think he is

I'll have ask him to program an SKS FOB then. I know the part number. I know a new SKS FOB requires Toyota provide a seed that resyncs the car to the new FOB. I just read another thread about the antenna and wanted to make sure it was connected, but to eliminate that possibility. Someone on the thread know the placement of the antenna used to receive the FOB signal?

I had him reprogram with a brand new SKS FOB and the problem went away. Not an antenna issue.

Congratulations, how much did he charge you for the new fob and programming, if you don't mind saying?
