What are the symptoms of a engine water pump failure ,I do get the engine light refering to the water pump P261B ...once engine reach 105c everything shuts down ...
Once restart the temperature goes back to normal only to happen again maybe half hour later. It is intermittent.
Should I see any movement in the coolant tank when engine is off or on ? Thanx

If I activate the water pump while using the techstream software should I have coolant water coming out from the return pipe on the coolant tank? Thanx

when the water pump is active, it sucks the coolant from the reservoir into the cooling system, once its deactivated, the over flowed coolant will return back to the reservoir.

I just checked the CEL code for you. It's a Coolant Pump "B" Control Malfunction. The 3 trouble area's are.

-Open or short in the water pump assembly circuit (not possible since you hear your water pump working)
-Water pump assembly (possible if its water pump speed is less than 900 rpm while it is operating)
-ECM (not likely since its receiving command from your techstream)

I feel like you need to check if your water pump is working properly by having the right rpm output.

That I'm not too sure... I know there's just a function to activate the water pump... not sure about checking the rpm output. I haven't used techstream for along time lol...

I put the car in maintainance mode and kept the coolant tank cap off .... thinking of air in system?...the fan started blowing at around 95c and then temp go down to about 90c while I can see the coolant on the tank return hose....all good ....only after about the third start of the fan some water came out from the tank to then settle again.
I noticed different noises coming from pump when I was checking it with the techstream...everytime I click the on button the sound would be different .....
I just ordered a new pump anyway ...with 215k I guess is a good guess that is dying slowly lol

well it seems like the water pump is working properly with those temp... Your vehicle is over heating though?

Yes various time during the day...once it reaches 105c it completely shuts down.... engine off ...HV off....all goes bye bye and need to pull over with what speed I got left.
It takes about 2 attempt to restart to go back to normal...
It may be ok for a hour and then again....as become more often in last couple of weeks.

oh ok. Well since it's giving you the CEL, I would fix that issue first and go from there. Hopefully its just the water pump issue.

Is the pump always on when the engine is on or off? Or it starts only when reaching a particular temperature ?

it should be on when the engine is on. It gets its signal from the ECM.

Thanks.... what I find strange is that if I start the pump with the techstream and with a running cold engine i would expect coolant been pushed out from the return hose ....but it doesn't....,
But once reach about 70c I can see coming thru

Yeah, when the engine is cold, you won't see any flow until the engine is hot, then the radiator cap expels any over flowed coolant from the cooling system back to the coolant reservoir. Then when the engine needs more coolant, it'll take it from the coolant reservoir.

I did find the pump RPM on the techstream..
The rpm increase together with the engine temperature.... started at around 3000 rpm at 40c and reached over 6000 RPM when the engine was at 95c ....
What I noticed that multiple times when close to or after 6000rpm 95c the RPM speed showed 0 for a couple of seconds .....but once down to 88c rpm was steady without hiccups .
Could this mean that the pump stops spinning for few seconds at a time because of the high cooler temps when it shouldn't? Just guessing IMG_20170811_214225.jpg IMG_20170811_214352.jpg IMG_20170811_214432.jpg

That is interesting, I would like to know what's the rpm with another person on here Prius to see if it is the same results or not. Maybe you can try the same test with the new water pump to see if it does the same or not.

So bascially the water pump stops working when the temp is high correct?

Yes once it reaches around the 6000rpm and close to 95c the rpm value suddenly goes to 0 for few seconds....and again...and again .. until the temperature goes down and the speed is constant +/-

@m.wynn has tracked the Rpms on Techstream with his vxdiag dongle. I think I remember 2672, but I have slept since I saw it in action:sick:.
