Sounds like it is a questionable dealer. Here is small print off from buyTOYOTA.com about the cash back. I guess, there can be non-participating dealers out there, but I wouldn't want to buy from them, if that is the case.

Offer ends 09-05-2017, cannot be combined and is subject to availability. Cash back from Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. Varies by region. See participating dealer for details.

They are a participating dealer because he said Toyota offers the $3500 cash back and if you take it then no 0.9 financing. I said fine so he said the rate would be 2.9 for 60 months. Fine again. Until he said they will get the 2.9 from a bank and pay Toyota cash for the car and bottom line the price of the car is 27,000. So basically he gave me $1209 off the sticker and giving me the higher interest rate. So pissed because we have bought 6 cars from this dealer so I don't know what they are doing but they just lost a customer

I am not sure about New Jersey, but around here the prices dealers quote usually have already subtracted the incentive for the car.

Other dealers in the area show the sticker price then the 3500 back and then show the sale price. That's why I am so pissed because he said I was getting it but he said I don't see it because it's only if you pay cash for the car and to do that they have to go to the bank to finance. Nothing made sense

They are correct in that you can only get either cash rebate or factory low APR financing, not both. Most dealers works numbers backwards, if you are financing, they will put the monthly payment you can afford and find best terms they can profit from. If they gave you offer of $27000 for a car without rebate, I would use that number as starting number and negotiate to get $3500 taken off from that. Did you have any trade-in? Because that would complicate the situation.

They weren't doing that. He said 27,000 for the car, 9000 for my trade and the payments were 362 for 5 years. He said no 0.9 because I wanted the rebate so I had to take 2.9 if I took the rebate but nowhere did the rebate reflect anywhere.

Without seeing actual number he presented to you, it's hard to say how he came up with the final number, but if you weren't happy with the dealer or the salesperson, i think you did right thing by walking out. I would take a deal somewhere else, or at the least, different sales person. When I buy a car I contact several dealers by e-mail only, no phone, and ask for the firm offer number making sure if the offer include rebate and other catch 20 terms, and I print it out. I then take the print out of the best offer to a dealer to do test drive. This dealer is often not the same one that gave me the best offer. I then negotiate to have them match the offer I received from other dealer. If they don't comedown on their offer to match, I walk out. In my case my final sales price of the vehicle had $2600 dealer discount plus $3125 factory incentive. Only thing I lost out on my deal was, I traded in my previous Prius too low. They were betting on recouping the loss on the new vehicle by sale of used traded in car.

Yes this was a first that's for sure. When we asked him to explain it he couldn't. All he kept saying is that the rebate goes to the bank to pay Toyota

Price of car was 28,209 and he said they would give it to me for 27,000 at 2.9% and give me $9000 for my trade. Nowhere to be found was the rebate. Since when does Toyota only give you an incentive if you pay cash for the car. Thanks for the info. I will do that and go to another dealer this week

Definitely go to another dealer. If you really want the specific Prime at the first one and the second one does not have it, tell them where it is and perhaps they can trade for it.
I first looked at the Gen 4 Prius at my local dealer. I could not test drive at that time due to the parking brake recall. The local dealer would not discount and said the lower trim was only available in the blac interior I did not want. He then proceeded to try to sell me a used (non-hybrid) Camry.
My preferred salesman who owns a Gen 1 Prius but is 150 miles away got me the car I wanted and carefully explained all the features before my test drive. I ended up very happy with that purchase. I have not seen any Primes listed on their website though.

Yes this is correct. The amount gets taken off of your loan after applying paying for everything and getting the taxes paid on the non rebated amount.

You would need to pay those taxes & fees anyway. There should have been. price difference, IMHO

Problem was he wasn't taking it off anywhere. Just saying it went to the bank but not one number reflected it

If it’s not reflected in your final loan balance then I would definitely go somewhere else

It wasn't and that's why I left. He was selling me the car for 27,000 and giving me 9,000 for my trade and had me financing 18,000 plus fees and tax. Where is the 3500?

They didn't have the car I wanted there anyway but were going to get it for me. We have bought 6 cars from this dealer and never an issue. Today was just insane. Saying I only get the rebate if I pay cash for the car and then saying the rebate goes to the bank. Nothing made sense. I am just going to go to the dealer that has the car there and see how it goes.
