I had no problem doing a Prime test drive at Roseville Toyota. But don't ask me about their pressure to buy expensive dealer add-ons.

Hi would like opinions on this deal before we go ahead. Was quoted by my local NY dealer (we have been customers since 2008) for a Prius Prime Red advanced with black interior:

$30520 includes $3500 dealer discount (Edmunds price)
    1,200 additional dealer discount
    1,100 NYS tax credit
6,000 trade in for honda civic
Total: 22,220, excludes tax & fees.
Plus $4500 federal tax credit when I file my tax returns.

Also, free oil changes for two years, and road side service.

I currently have a 2008 Prius which we plan to keep as a 2nd car.

    Thanks. Joanne

That sounds like a decent deal ... I was recently offered a deal of $29,500 + TTL (before any tax credits), which I think is a little more than what you're getting here... the $6000 for Honda trade-in, you may be able to get more if you sell this on the private market.

the two basic items are $3,500. toyota rebate (everyone gets this in ny/nj) and the $1,200. dealer discount. that's the one to focus on. also the trade in. it's a good deal, there may be better out there, depends on how hard you want to work to try to save another thousand or two.
    all the best!(y)

Hello! I'm about to buy one, thinking about getting the advanced model. I have never bought a new car. Can someone guide me how to? How much is a "good deal"?? I live in Baltimore, MD. Should I go somewhere else to buy? Do other dealers offer better incentives? Should I wait until end of the month? What incentives are there, how to check?

    I have a 2006 corolla, should I trade in?

Complete newbie at buying cars, any straightforward suggestions/information are welcomed!

If it makes sense to you, consider converting some money from a 401k or other tax-deductible account to a Roth. That'd be one possible way to use any remaining value of the $4500 credit if you don't have that much tax liability since you cannot carry it over. I will most likely be doing that myself since only have about ~$3k in tax liability this year.

Could you specify where to find the $3500 rebate? I couldn't find it.

$3,500. is only in ny/nj. you can find your local rebate on dealer websites, or toyota.com plugging in your zip code.
new england is $3,125. see post #321 as an example.

car buying is daunting, especially for newbies. don't rush, you will get lot's of good advice here over the next week or so.
to see what good deals are in your area, read through the whole thread, looking for posts from local buyers.
when i buy, i email 3 dealers for their best price on similar models.i don't like going in until i'm ready to buy, because there are too many shenanigans at the dealerships. they are trained in how to screw the customer, and you are defenseless to their tactics.

That's awesome! I live in MD, so it's only 3 hr drive to NJ. Another question: on toyota website it says incentive is $3500 rebate OR 0.9% for 60 months, does that mean if I take the $3500, my interest rate on loan will be more than 0.9%?

Thanks in advance, I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions coming in the next couple days. And I really appreciate folks on this forum for giving good info/advice. I'm going to test drive one at my local dealer right now to get a feel behind the wheel.

Yes, factory incentives are either cash rebate or low APR financing through TFS. You can't have both, but if your credit is good, conventional loan is quite low around 2.5-3.5%. So, $3500 rebate is far better choice than 0.9% APR. Beside, if your credit is not good, TOYOTA will not finance it at low APR anyway.

New England states rebates are ONLY $3125 not $3500 like NY/NJ. ;)

Don't forget to check on the interest rate at Credit Unions. They are always cheaper than the banks. My Schools First Credit Union right now is giving 1.84% interest for new cars up to 6 or 7 years.

I have a question.. To get the $3500 cash back, do you have to pay cash for the car and not finance thru Toyota?

nope, you get it with finance, but they get it back in a higher rate. the great thing about cash is, you get the $3,500. and it's worthless in the bank. it's a win-win.

I am at another dealer and they again are telling me that to get the cash back you have to pay for the car outright and not finance thru Toyota.

maybe it's different in nj? i thought it was a toyota thing though. this 'bank' stuff has me confused, because like all manufacturers, toyota is the bank. it's more profitable than selling cars.
