We are visiting our daughter and on the trip the windshield started cracking. We were all set up with our insurance company to get it fixed when we discovered that there is a nationwide backorder. This is beyond comprehension. The dealerships have no idea when a replacement will come in.

Wow. That sounds really bad. What would Toyota's next move be?

Came from PRIME cracked windshield thread. My less than two weeks old Prime developped crack, and it I am now on a long waiting list to have it replaced.

In a meantime, quick search on NHTSA on Visibility/wiper complaints which include windshield crack issue revealed following. Prius certainly has disproportionately high numbers of cracked windshield complaints reported.

    TOTAL Complaints Visibility/Wiper

    2017 Prius Prime 18 8 44%

    2017 Prius 11 3 27%

    2016 Prius 53 14 26%

    2016 Prius v 49 14 28%

    2016 Prius c 51 13 25%

    2016 Camry hybrid 47 2 4%

    2016 Sonata hybrid 11 1 9%

    2016 Volt 6 0 0%

    2016 Crosstrek hybrid 9 1 11%

    2015 Civic hybrid 62 2 3%

    2016 Accord hybrid 0 0 0%

    2016 Accord 90 16 18%

    2016 Corolla 43 2 4%

My old Scion XB was notorious for windshield cracking and specks from rocks. Had my windshield replaced twice during the 9 years of ownership.

I have checked all of complaints on 2017 PRIME under "Visibility/Wiper". 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME 5 HB FWD | NHTSA All 8 of complaints are about windshield crack. Out of 8 complaints 6 of them are for Prius Prime, but 2 are listed as just Prius. I have not checked other models complaints completely, but some complaints seems to be duplicated under various models of Prius (HB, C, V) if the complainer was not specific. That might be the reason both v and c also have relatively higher incidents of "Visibility/Wiper" complaints compared with other models. I have not checked older models of Prius either, so alternatively it is possible Prius in general has higher incident of "Visibility/Wiper" problem.

You are not the first on this forum to have that opinion and I commiserate with you, but welcome to Prius Chat.

My 2016 was hit by a small rock/pebble kicked up from the truck in front of me the other day. Pit and half inch crack is now about 12 inches horizontal on the passenger side. Aside from this thread there seem to be a number of issues related to the Gen 4 windshield.

My 2005, 2010, 2014 and 2015 never had these issues and they'd certainly had their share of pings of the glass.

We had to replace my wife's '07 windshield a little over a year ago due to multiple cracks.

I bought a used 2016 Prius 2 February of 2016. The windshield had been replaced once before I bought it and I have replaced it twice.

Sometime in February 2016 manufacturing made some changed to the combo meter. I wonder if the windshield changed too.
My 2017 has been good even surviving a wind & hail storm we thought would break the windshield for sure. It was blowing the car sideways on the road!

Can anyone comment on if the HUD will still be functional if an aftermarket windshield is installed?

The radar sensing camera needs recalibration after windshield replacement. Perhaps the HUD does too.

Some have mentioned a distorted vision effect on the HUD with an aftermarket screen.

    Hello,
Can you please share the manuals (RM3200U) and (BM3200U)? I am thinking of doing this job myself. [email protected].

Toyota’s manuals are copyrighted publications, so I’m not able to post or send them, but a page on the PriusChat Wiki explains how you can get access, possibly at no cost.
