My mind is blown. I got a quote from Geico for full insurance (100/300 comp collision) for the 2017 Prime Advanced we are on our way to pick up. Geico wanted $2000 for NY (Long Island)! I had a 2014 Camaro, 2016 WRX, and a 2010 Challenger R/T insured in PA for $1000/yr for all of them. In PA, the Prime would be $478/yr. (My license is PA, my husband's license is NY, we have homes in both states). I need the NY registration to get a clean pass to go in the HOV lane.

What is your insurance like? Which company would you recommend?

I have no idea what actuarial data they use, but I have GEICO, and my insurance rate for 2017 PRIME Premium went up only $50 from previous 2015 Prius Two when I switched. That's $100 increase per year. The cost is something like $300/6mo for 300/300, no deductible comp, $100 deductible collision.

$2000 is with a $500 deductible and no glass or roadside assistance.

Don't forget, your credit rating also comes into play on insurance. It shouldn't, but it does. FICO Credit score 822 & 823.

The question is - Is the Clean Pass sticker worth $1500 to you? If not, insure it in PA.

It takes me 2.5 hrs to get home from work, and that's WITH the clean pass. I might try staying in the regular lanes and see if there is actually a time difference. I can't see paying $1500 more, but this might need some testing.

Definitely worth testing. I don't use the LIE, so I don't have any use for the HOV lanes. My issue with HOV lanes in general is that it's only one lane - If there's a slowpoke/disabled vehicle in it, you're stuck until you can get to the next HOV exit and back into the regular lanes.

Always shop around for insurance. I like to bundle all my vehicle and home policies (auto, motorcycle, home, earthquake, umbrella, rent house) with the same insurer for both the discounts and my convenience. Every three years I get the declaration sheets from each policy into a packet and offer them to one or two other insurers to check the price. Safeco is working well. Amica was a few dollars higher on some, lower on others, the total difference wasn't low enough to bother changing. Years ago Geico was higher than Safeco, so I switched. Progressive is higher. Next year I'll try USAA. In some cases, with some agents, the difference can be very significant. Also, if you have a ticket within the last 3 years or a collision claim, your old insurer may let one slide without a rate increase. A new insurer may attach a risk premium to you. Rates vary tremendously according to location.

In any case, do shop around.

Years ago I used GEICO when it was called Government Employees Insurance Company. About three times in a row after I received a quote and then received the bill it would be significantly higher. At the third time I switched to USAA. At the time I was a Navy officer which was a requirement. I believe they will now insure anyone, even East Coast lawyers.:) Suggest you check them out, as my insurance only went up $50. per six months, going from a 2009 Miata to a 2017 Prius Prime.
