This past weekend, outside temperature was in the high 90s and the A/C wasn't cold enough even though we have it at 73 and Car is primarily driven by my spouse and I have been ignoring(not intentionally) for about a year about spouse's comments about lack of cold air. So, now when I drove, it hit me(no pun) that it wasn't blowing cold enough air.

Came to PC and read few forum postings and started checking various fluids, checked the engine coolant tank and low be hold, it's almost empty. when I open the cap, I cannot see any liquid. Does this mean, it's leaked?

I see Amazon is selling two variants, want to see which one is better for the Prius? and can I just top it off to the max allowable level?

Toyota Genuine Fluid 00272SLLC2 Long Life Coolant

One says "Red Fluid" and the other has a part no "00272-SLLC2"

The ac issue is not related to coolant, they are 2 different things.

You need to recharge your ac Freon to get cold air.

The pink coolant is for the engine, so it won't overheat. Maybe a good idea to check the water pump for leakage.

Thanks. The empty coolant tank caught my attention so overlooked the Freon aspect.

Can I buy Freon and recharge myself ? I will search thro' the forum posts.

Also, if there is a leak - obviously, recharging won't help. Q is should I be fixing the leak considering that it probably gonna cost at-least $1K more or less given that this is a 2007 vehicle.

First...determine if it's not blowing cold "or" not blow as hard (volume). Prius blower motors have a history of loosing grunt. You need an A/C person to fix if it's a refrigerant issue...blower change is easy. Did it on my 2010 and works good as the 2015 now.

Can someone post a link to amazon or ebay or other online auto shops where I can purchase the r134 freon kit to recharge?

Respectfully...many here can and might, but know that "if" a low charge is the problem, there's a reason...and you really need to know what your doing. Over charging with muck it up faster than an under charge...and you really don't want to keep filling the glass if it has a leak.

It is not freon (a specific chemical) it is refrigerant.

If you checked the coolant overflow tank when COLD, being that low is perfectly normal.

The FIRST thing you should do is drop the temp setting down to about 65 or so and see if that helps.
If you are letting the "automatic" control run things, 73 might be too high for a really hot day.

"Topping off" the reserve/overflow tank is probably not good advice.
If you fill it too full some will spew out when hot.

BECAUSE.....if there is a leak and the refrigerant really is low.....simply recharging it is a waste of time and money because it will just leak out again.

AND you need to turn the temp down first to test whether or not there is a real problem.

Thanks. I did check with it after about 3-4 hours after the last drive.

I didn't think of lowering it to 65, figured outside in 90s and A/C set at 73 should be OK. Will try next time I drive..

It was cold at 73 previously, but Let's say at 65, it's cold - should I leave it at that setting or does it tell anything more?

If you need a reason to seek a professional's help in doing the ac recharge, if it's done wrong or you accidentally put in the wrong "refrigerant", it can cost $2000 to repair it.

The professional should be someone familiar with hybrid repair. Prius used a special non conductive oil, when needed, add only nd-11 oil. Most likely need just the straight 134a refrigerant, no oil

How long have you lived in Florida ?

You should set the temperature to a point that you are comfortable.

In my case, if the car has been sitting out in the sun AND the outside temp is 95 AND the sun is shining in the windows.......I need to set it at 68 to 70 for the first 20 minutes or so; if set higher than that, it will start reducing the output (fan speed mostly) WAY before the occupants start feeling comfortable.

After it starts feeling cool, I then turn it up one degree at a time and usually end up at 72.
Only set above 72 at night, heavy clouds or in the "winter" time.

To begin with, I'd like to buy the right refrigerant based on PC folks feedback.
I haven't recharged car a/c before but have recharged home a/c units so have some basic knowledge.

can someone post a link to a brand of 134a they recommend?

this is what I used in mine when I replaced the condenser , called the dealer and asked how much the system requires, I forget what it is now but im sure the info is out there somewhere.. then I brought it to a local shop to have the system evacuated and refilled.. they charged me 50 bucks but until you find the leak you are wasting your money on Freon if there is one..
