The red triangle with "problem" appeared on my dash last night along with the check engine light. Usually I take my vehicles into auto zone where they check the DTC for free. Unfortunately, that didn't work this time.

I can take it into my local Toyota dealership for the standard diagnostic fee, but I've heard users mention the ScanGauge II. Does that device read Prius codes or not? I know it's about $40 more expensive, but I'd rather purchase one and not have to pay the dealership $110 every time the triangle appears.

    Thanks!

I have a ScanGauge and it can only read normal OBD codes, the same as the code reader at most local auto parts stores. Best is a Mini-VCI cable with Techstream with a dedicated laptop/hard drive partition. Some other code readers can read the Toyota specific ECU codes, but Techstream can do things like monitor hybrid battery voltages, etc.

Kevin you can send it in with $25 and they will upgrade it to an X Gauge. I did that with my old Scangauge and it now reads hybrid codes, plus there's a lot of pids that can be added too. Many discussions on here about it.
    Search.
