I know JC feels we are about to hear an avalanche of Gen3 batt fails, but we have very few Gen3 fails to date, I think this is literally the first 2011 batt fail we have heard about. I would be curious if someone swapped an old Gen2 pack into this car. There was a rash of HV batts being stolen in CA.

But sounds to me like the orig owner did something funny.

PC member GrumpieCabbie (I think that was his name) was one of the first to report problems with Gen 3 batteries in Taxi fleets. He's based out of the UK though.

gen 3's are going on 8 years old, Toyota puts that time frame on their warrantee for a reason.

    Update!
Been a bit busy lately but here to report with some juicy details. So it turns out, the triangle of death did come back with vengeance - same code, same symptom. Being a newbie I am, cleared the code one more time even though I now know for sure something is definitely wrong with the battery, or.. worse, other components. Called up the seller and demand to honor the agreement we made last time where he pays half the cost and i pay the other half if it in fact was the battery! I really wanted to try doing it myself, but maybe not this time...

Long story short, took it to this guy, Felix Calle, in El Monte that the seller dealt with before. Seller showed up and honored his end of the agreement, giving me cash back!! Left car overnight and Felix replaced the bad cells - he told me there were 6 bad cells in there - but didn't really show me detailed report. Will just have take his word for it. He offered either no warranty, 4 month 4,000 miles, or 1 year, 25,000 miles. His price was very reasonable, compared to others offering basically the same thing, and since the additional sum to get warranty wasn't too much, for an added peace of mind, I took 1 yr 25k mile warranty. Since my friend will be driving a lot, let's see what happens!

OMG overnight? A module swap probably won't last you a year. Hope you didn't pay an arm and leg for it.

I like the receipt without Date on it

This is sounding really crazy. Seller knows this guy? So he gives you $500, assuming you paid $1000. Then the repair guy gives $500 back to seller cause he normally only charges $500.

Or worse you paid $1500, seller gives you $750. Repair guy gives seller back $1000+ for the referral.

The story gets stranger by the day. Yet the mileage seems to be inline with the OP's avatar. 900 miles on the Prius since purchase. I thought it was discussed either in this thread or another thread that you need balanced/matching cells in a battery for longevity? Even if you have only one bad cell all the cells have to be matching cells or the battery will fail.

Yeah.. all sounding quite crazy, right? This is an experience I've never had before either. :cautious: The seller is kinda shady and I can't really trust what he says.. but he did pay half the cost of the fix and I am actually quite surprised he did it. He told me he doesn't want to sell a bad car and the buyer being very unhappy. He'd rather have a happy buyer so I can come back to him next time I need a car... but again, its really weird as he is somewhat shady, but he wants to make his customers happy. idk... it just doesn't match up. lol

Oh.. the receipt is just a portion of the whole paper with the date. The guy is legit...although his small shop in El Monte really doesn't look it. It was a lot less than any of the price you mentioned above . I've called like 7 places in LA/OC area offering pretty much the same thing and they were all changing around $900-$1000 or similar. He basically told me whether I get warranty or not, I get the same battery. I am just paying extra for the warranty - he will basically repair/replace if it goes bad within the specified time.

A module swap is not a proper repair, at any price. May have worked if he changed 1 bad module, but he replaced 6. The pack is really out of balance

Ok... to clarify, I just called the tech. I had wrong information. It gets crazier. He said out of 28 cells, 14 cells were good, and 12 seemed bad. He 'reconditioned' the cells, not replace the cells. According to him, the 12 bad ones aren't fundamentally bad but just needed to be reconditioned so that holding capacity of them are as good as the other good ones. and he of course balanced the entire battery. He believe it will last more than 2-3 years with these reconditioned batteries and with my warranty, if anything goes bad with battery within the specified time, he will take care of it free of charge.

Very surreal this whole thing is to me (n)

EDIT: Correction, 16 cells were good (NOT 14 cells)

If you parked the car for 2 to 3 days the error will come back immediately
