We've just been told the price of fuel in the UK is gonna go eye-wateringly sky high next week, because of the effects of Hurricane Harvey.........Any excuse in the UK, to cynically MUG the motorists at the fuel pumps, what with fuel taxes running at about 80%.....

Europe was likely receiving a bunch of diesel from Texas.

I'm laughing hysterically, I'm in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, with over 500 miles left in my tank!

Indeed! Makes you wonder why a country that has its very own North Sea Crude Oil, and gets tanker ship loads from the Saudi Triangle would suddenly start blaming floods in Texas for a price rise in fuel, starting from tomorrow.

The likely truth is, there are speculators oil tankers moored off-shore loaded with cheap crude, waiting to make a killing when a dubious excuse is found to astronomically raise prices.

This has happened in the past.
Nonetheless, even if the price goes up for me, let's shed a tear for non Hybrid owners in the U.K., who will literally weep once the price gouging begins.

With at least 550 miles out of a tankful commuting in London, and a 3 week interval between fill ups, I'll be laughing my head off.

It is all about refinery optimization to produce the right mix of diesel and gas IIRC. Since we in the US use gas and not diesel, we have surplus diesel to sell and it makes sense to export it and for the UK to buy it rather than build more diesel refinery capacity of their own. In most circumstances.

Part of the reason for the increase in diesel prices in the US around the time of the introduction of ULSD was that the lower sulfur content made it easier to sell in Europe.

Thanks, Mikefocke and Trollbait; I was totally unaware of that particular intel. You never hear that mentioned in the UK, but it makes sense.....

Due to hurricane Harvey our local gas prices have jumped by 40 cents/gallon. Slowly, co-workers are no longer giving me grief over driving a Prius. One guy that drives a big gas guzzling Ford F-250 Crew Cab 4X4 every day was complaining about the spike in fuel prices. I just laughed and quickly did the math, telling him "Dang, that's gonna cost me an extra $1.15/week" LOL

unfortunately, for every guzzler driver that complains about gas price increases, there are a hundred who could care less.

Don't worry, really, in a year those decade old questions will be pertinent to a low of cars! How long to charge the battery, what happens when they run out...what's your range? You relatives are actually from the future.

What happens when you bring up raising the Gas Tax to these well off acquaintances to fix roads and bridges? I bet they'll raise cries of a new Boston Tea Party about sky high Gas Taxes......

Anyhow, I'm already getting double the US Avg MPG in my lowly Gen 3 Prius, and when the Great Gas Panic in Dallas occurred last week (still going, to an extent), it was the first time I felt like a true "Smug Prius Owner" :D

well, let's put it this way. the legislature passed an auto tax increase annually, based on inflation, and the voters repealed it in a repeal initiative.

Yup, 'Merica. We'll complain bitterly about problems, but don't you dare suggest we raise taxes to fix them.
