Can the metal key be taken to a hardware store type place and be copied with their machines? Anyone know what the easiest way to get an extra copy of the metal key (on a regular key) is?

Probably more of a specialist locksmith - they're called "Internal cut key" or "laser cut key" - I checked around here and didn't find a locksmith who did them. Unlike the old double-sided type, they're apparently a tighter tolerance too, so fudging one up yourself would possibly be difficult or impossible.

The key would also be of little use without a fob. It would just permit opening the front doors.

    My first post!

We can cut them in my shop. Not sure about the key blanks though as it is only cut on one side and therefore fairly thin.

Or - locking the doors but leaving the car POWERed up. Not super secure, but it works for ducking into the corner store if you want the A/C to run while you're there.

You would remove the physical key from the fob first. You need a physical key to lock the doors in that situation.

I work as an Uber driver and appreciate the door locked/engine on feature to preserve cabin temperature. It's just a pain in the nice person to keep pulling the metal key out of the fob, so I was looking to get a copy so it could just be on my keychain.

Perhaps search the threads of those who have bought additional fobs. I though I read most locksmiths could cut the key. I am not sure about blanks, though. That might be a dealer parts item, if it is available.

I would imagine the dealer has to be able to cut them.

Some fobs there have blank keys IIRC.

Normally "laser" cut keys are cut on both sides. The fob key is single sided. I suspect this would cause a problem for some machines, and blanks would likely not be readily available. I'm sure I could come up with one (or make one) if necessary.

Made a key blank today. Haven’t cut it because the machine I want to use is in one of our other shops.

    Maybe this weekend.

Well, I didn't get there! I have a week at work and then I'm off on vacation for 2. It isn't looking promising at the moment.

Ok, first day of my 2 week vacation and I go to work! Had to pick up an expense cheque, so it was worth it.

I took my manufactured keyblank (from a safe deposit box blank) and cut it on one of our laser key machines. Works like a charm!

Not sure if the picture is showing, so I inserted a link to the picture as well.
