I've owned my Prime for 3 weeks now. I spent the last week and a half or so using the gas engine trying to burn up some gas so the gas doesn't sit in my car and get stale, since I can go everywhere I need to in town on the EV battery, but, that was a ton of work, with the car always resetting to EV on me. Managed to use up a quarter tank.

My car has 350 miles on it. Waiting patiently to pass the 600 mile mark the dealership advised me to wait to use the cruise. I'm one who prefers to set the cruise any time I can, so, this has been a challenge.

Monday the electrician comes to wire power to a small post near my driveway, as I live in a mobile home, and have no garage, and the outdoor plugs were helpfully installed around the back of the house. I've been using an extension cord, but, I know that isn't the best idea, so, figured I'd best get the power post wired before winter hit.

I love the car. I have come to appreciate these forums. I found how to turn off the speed limit pop up in my HUD. I've learned more acronyms than I ever thought possible. I've learned a lot about various features in the car. Most of all, I've found a community of like minded car owners. Thanks ya'll!

    Welcome!
I am not sure why they said to wait 600 miles before using the cruise. My salesman, who owns a Gen 1 Prius did not warn about that. I drove my Gen 4 Prius 150 miles home on the highway using cruise control.
I think I used it on the test drive with the salesman too on a car with less than 9 miles on it.
@bwilson4web should be able to comment. He drove his Prime Plus from Rhode Island home to Alabama, IIRC.

He told me it was because they like to let the engine break in at 'all the speeds'. Who knows. I try to follow advice of the deemed 'experts'. Maybe others can weigh in on what they were told? Of course, my dealer also told me to be sure to burn a half tank of gas each 2 - 3 months, when the book says something like 5.4 gal in a year, and that the car will tell me if the gas has gone stale.

I believe I would believe a document from Toyota's site over the salesman, but that is my personal opinion.

I have to agree - legal is going to side with printed documentation, not verbal from a sales guy who'd never even seen a Prime before mine.....

  10. Yeah, I was told that was not a problem with the Prime. It has more to do with the same constant RPM for really long periods affecting break-in, but if you're going around town or up/down hills, then it's fine.

prime constantly resets to ev when you press the hv button?

  13. No, resets into EV when starting the car, so it's an extra button to use gas.

Constant speed on flats -> constant RPM, I think that's why it's written that way in the manual.

since you mentioned no garage, you may get a kick out of my experience last winter ( my car is also not in a garage but outside exposed to the elements):notworthy:

I want to know the answer without reading all 18 pages! Why was the ICE coming on?

well....my opinion is it's was the same reason ICE comes on in the 2012-2015 PIP. Even though the Prime has a traction battery heater while plugged in, being outside in temperatures below 30 degrees F. My Prime's ICE kicked in when I exceeded 25 MPH.

Wow, this is something news to me that I have to take extra precaution for the first 1000 miles. Toyota set of manuals is a thick book and I didn't even open it yet, except for taking out the chargepoint card.

Every now and then, I have pretty much done everything against the recommendation. My friend told me to drive carefully the new car with no hard acceleration. I told him that he is crazy, as those rules applied to engines 20 years back in past. In the new age engines, these rules dont apply at all. I was wrong all the way.

Sounds like winter driving is going to spoil my goal to drive without using gas! Even this morning the engine came on when I turned on the defroster. I took care of that by turning off AC & using defrost fan only. At least, I think that was what I was doing.
