End of model year "red tag sale" = opportunity?

    (I hope I am posting this in the right forum.)
    Last weekend, I looked at new cars while my car was being serviced at a dealer.
    Our family currently drives a 2003 and a 2005 Prius, they have been well-maintained and run just fine. But as we get older we are really be very interested to get all of the modern state-of-the-art safety features in a new car, which we would probably keep for a long time.

    The 2018 Prius models have not yet arrived at the dealership, so I could not do a test drive, but they did have on the lot a new 2017 Prius Four with SofTex interior, which my wife would like. Since it is last year’s model, they are promoting “red tag pricing” because they are motivated to get the old ones sold.

    My question is what should I offer for this car to make it a “good deal”?

    Alternatively, is it worth waiting for the “totally redesigned” 2018 model?

    Any suggestions from the wise folks here will be appreciated. Below is the information from the window sticker.

    I picked up my '16 in September of last year as the 17's were hitting, and got $3k off (~12%) without even asking. This was a combination of $2000 Toyota Financial cash and a dealer discount of $1000 off of MSRP. They had four in the color and trim that I bought; I picked the one with the latest production date on it.

    I'm not sure exactly where you live in Texas, but popping in 75001 into Toyota's site reveals there's $1750 off from TMAC (but you lose the ability to take 0%). Perhaps offer $28.5 - around $4k off, which would be $2250 from them and the $1750 TMAC - and see if they bite?

    Sorry, wrong acronym (I had GMAC on the brain) - should have been TMCC for Toyota Motor Credit Corp. Long day at work.

    But I even got that wrong, as the fine print says it's actually directly from Toyota, not their finance arm:

    $1750 Customer Cash from TMS on a new 2017 Prius. Customer Cash is not available with Special APR or Lease offers. Must take delivery from dealer stock. Dealer sets final price. Offer valid 10-03-2017 through 10-31-2017 in AR, LA, MS, OK, TX. Contact participating Dealer for details.

    So you don't even have to finance through Toyota to get the cash back.

    i would email all the dealers you are willing to drive to, and get their best price. i can't help with 2018 vs 2017, that's a personal decision. for me, it's all about price.

    I wouldn't buy a car with $1188 worth of dealer installed junk but I'm not located in the South East or Gulf States Regions.

    Truecar shows a BP Four-AT for $30255 MSRP (mats & AT are bundled) for an average of $27934. Also search using zip codes as far away as you want to purchase. Since you asked for a number, I would start somewhat lower than $27934 and stop there.

    I suspect the only difference for 2018 will be a higher MSRP but one never knows.

    Check out other areas you might be willing to travel to. For example, Chicago has $2,000 factory cash back on Prius liftbacks.

    There are a lot more Toyota dealers there than in D/FW, I suspect you could almost name your price.

    Toyota has made no announcements about the 2018. There may be some mid cycle changes but it won't be totally redesigned.
