    Thanks for sharing!!

Had never heard of this before (is it posted/stickied elsewhere?), so I went out and plugged in my elm237 and fired up Torque.. then felt good about MG1 being higher (y)

I agree that failed windings are rare, but will add that failed inverters are more rare.

Maybe hearing it from Carolyn will make it stick? Anyways, why not drag her into this mess as well.[/QUOTE]

I haven't called Carolyn but I replied to an older post on her website page regarding these codes and asked the question Ray in Florida suggested earlier about the car driving well with no shudder. I wonder if she'll respond?

We haven't decided which mechanic yet. The Huntsville mechanic Bob Wilson found is very well rated and I had seen their website already. But they don't mention hybrids... My husband, a golf club components broker, is going into his slow season and said he might take the car to Birmingham to the hybrid mechanic there (the one Max found). As Bob suggested, I'll follow up with whatever we find out.

I'm still overwhelmed by all the posters on this thread. What a great bunch of guys you all are!

I don't think our car has been flooded. It had a clean title and had always "lived" in Georgia before we bought it. It has a ton of Toyota records, all from one owner. I think they sold it when this code came up, and someone cleared the codes so that they weren't showing up when we bought the car from a third party who had purchased it at auction. Which just goes to show you a clean Carfax with regular oil changes and 100k miles is NOT sufficient reason to buy a Prius.

I think what Bob was meaning, was that if (when) you need to do a transaxle swap there will be plenty of choice from the pool of write-off flooded Prius in Texas and Florida.

Aha! I see now. Would a transaxle from a flooded car be safe to buy?

The transaxle is well sealed so after cleaning the exterior, it should be perfectly fine. A/C compressors too. But the engine and exhaust assembly, not so much. Electronics would also be suspect, not impossible, but not something high on my list. No seats, interior, or body parts would be trusted.

The expected database errors are making it hard to render the images but this is an excellent outline:

Windings shorted are a lot more than likely to have a different amount of resistance. And
I thought I explained why there’s shaking in my last post.

I was quoting your post where you said you had a dead shorted winding to ground and you drove 25 miles
With no issues. That is very hard to believe.

I would imagine if the winding is not shorted directly to ground as you state it could be leaking slightly by pinhole in winding coating and intermittently flashing/conducting to ground but most wind8ng failure in a g2 almost instantly becomes catastrophic as it will flash over and burn the whole winding pack. The windings are tightly packed together and as you know at hundreds of volts ac per winding and very high current.

But if extremely intermittent I would imagine you could then cause it to fail by driving the car extremely hard for a moment. Floor the car from a stop really hard. That would cause maximum current and load applied to the trans.
Any flaw in high volt isolation in the trans will immediately occur.

Drive it like you stole it. See if it logs an iso fault.

Bob, I called Automotive Career Development Center and spoke with Craig. He didn't have any former students in Huntsville but gave me a Cullman, AL name (John Thrasher) and phone number. Unfortunately it led to a dead end. John's replacement wasn't sure a Prius was a hybrid (at least he was honest). I also called the Birmingham shop Max found but they don't do transmissions.

What did you think of Huntsville Automotive? I think you said you were going there today. Their website mentions a lot of systems they work on, but I didn't see transmissions.

I like them but then I'm not the 'average bear.' They changed the transmission fluid and gave me a good sample. They didn't deflate my tires but let me know they were high. They also looked at the plastic quarter panel and explained why it didn't 'snap back in' (cosmetic for now but I may try to solve another day.) Their labor rates may seem high but we're also paying for competence.

I recommend making an appointment and take hardcopy of the significant posts and references in a folder. Ask them to confirm the diagnosis and give you an estimate. Make sure the car has P0AA6 on the controller when you drive there. Then you'll have something to compare with Bill Penny.

For a third estimate, I'd call AutoBeYours and see if that makes sense. With AutoBeYours, there would be adventure of getting the car there; leaving it long enough for a repair; getting back to pick it up and; the adventure of the return drive. I suspect the car can get there but would have a second one following to handle any issues on the way up. Drop off the car and return. It would be an adventure and I've not visited Steve before and both of my cars have receiver hitches. However, a U-haul rental might work too.

Suzy do as I suggested go drive the car hard. Floor it at a light a few times and keep if floored for a while.
That will provide maximum voltage and current to the trans and will expose any hi voltage issue suspected.

Note how it drives if it throws a code on the dash.any minor drivability issue will quickly show itself.

You cannot hurt the car doing this. Make a video.

I also monitored MG1 and MG2 temps on my 2004 with 289K. My car runs fine with no leak codes. I drive it hundreds of miles in a week. MG2 temp ran consistently higher than MG1. The largest spread I saw was 77 to 93 degrees.

So either Bob's test is invalid or I also need to replace the transmission in my car. ;)

Posts like this one of the reasons I refrain from posting about a car not on my driveway. My hands-on experience is with Gen-1, Gen-3, and Prius Prime. I also have experience with failed Gen-1 transaxle. But I don’t hang in Gen-2 forums because I have no way to replicate other observations.

If your car is within a hundred miles of Huntsville AL, I would enjoy documenting your experience. Perhaps some photos or screen shots?

Thanks for clarifying these instructions, Ray. I had wondered if this test would cause some damage or a fire, especially since Bob advised to drive the car gently. If I do this, you want me to make a video of what happens on the dash, right? Also, should I also be running the Mini VCI and looking for something to happen on the screen in that program? Or both? If I am supposed to be watching the Mini VCI, which screen would it be (there are so many)? We have roads nearby with a 65 mpg limit; is 65 (or 70) fast enough, or should I go faster than that? Or could just "flooring it" from a slower speed provide adequate stress? Sorry for all the questions. There actually are some subjects on this earth that I feel I'm an expert on, but mechanical issues/cars is just not on that list!

Your MG temps are encouraging! And also, you drive a LOT of miles - I'm wondering what do you do for a living (if it's not too personal)? I can see why you have a Prius.

Bob, I just want to say how welcome your input is, even if you don't have a Gen-2 car. I appreciate all the time you've donated toward helping figure out this issue! You are very knowledgeable and super generous, too, a real asset to this website. Of course, I hope somehow my transaxle is not "toast," but if it is, I'm getting mentally prepared...

Please can you explain how you were able to interprete the H141T as Jan14, 2016? Would love to learn that.

Y not invest in a tech stream software to help with the diagnosis? That would help forum members contribute more.
