I found the missing 4" (vertical) in the trunk. It is below the battery.

Here is one comparison I found.
BMW i3 REx, BEVx Restrictions And My Plea To CARB To Unleash The REx

The Electric BMW i3: BMW i3 REx Lawsuit: How'd This Happen & Who's Really at Fault

The i3 was the first, and still is the only vehicle that is classified by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) as a "BEVx" vehicle. According to CARB, a BEVx vehicle is,"a relatively high-electric range battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to which an APU is added." Additionally, the vehicle must meet the following criteria:
    • The vehicle must have a rated all-electric range of at least 75 miles
    • The auxiliary power unit must provide range less than, or at most equal to, that of the battery range
    • The APU must not be capable of switching on until the battery charge has been depleted
    • The vehicle must meet "super ultra low emission vehicle" (SULEV) requirements
    • The APU and all associated fuel systems must comply with zero evaporative emissions requirements

The major limit is preventing the ICE from coming on until the battery is near depleted. European versions let the driver turn it on starting at 80% SOC. Many here have a tuner switch on the Europe coding.

The gas tank limit might also be software based. The computer just sees the tank as full or empty at a different point.

My friend got an almost loaded i3 Rex “Terra”. 15k miles for only $18,000. Evs do not hold their value with all the incentives.

  4. Makes me wonder if, after 5 years or so, it'll be worth it to get a used '17 Model S with 30k on it.

I think if you need to wait that long for a Model S, or any equivalent car, the cost of tires will make you cry.

I thought the Volt was the EV supplemented with a low mpg (more than a little gas) engine. Range extended but counterproductive economy-wise.

for people who want more ev, and only gas once in awhile, it's the perfect combination.
the i-3 requires too many pit stops, and $$$$$$$$$$. read bob's thread, he knows the bow dealer on a first name basis.

I’ve coded the BMW i3-REx: allow range extender to come on at 75% SOC for cross country; default medium acceleration and AC mode for longer city range, and; 2.3 usable gallon tank. I’m 27k/50k warranty miles and 14 months from the 5 year warranty and looking forward to the end.

I have a list of planned mods including perfect 4-wheel alignment, 2.5 gallon aux tank extension, and cooled EGR recirculating. Also a trailer wiring harness.

I have a thread in the EV section about what I’ve done: Why the BMW i3-REx | PriusChat

The MPG is only low if you are coming from a gen3 or newer Prius, and then low is still much better than an ICE car.
Besides, with more EV miles, the ICE fires up less often.

Volt is also less efficient in Ev mode than Prime. So it uses more electricity and/or more gas to go the same distance, all while carrying less and costing more.

  12. And that is, once again, why I love my Prime... even in HV mode, I can still easily get 70 mpg driving between towns on a nice day, and at least 55 mpg on the highway at fair speeds, and go for a very long trip before refueling.

true, but it still gets 50-60-70 miles on a charge. tesla doesn't care about efficiency. and you can get a fabulous deal on a volt, they can't give them away, much like prime.

Prime sales in California, the biggest auto market in the U.S., doesn't follow the poor sales of the Volt. We don't see the huge discounts you get in the Northeast. I see almost as many Primes here on the street as I see Gen 4's. As more Californians discover the woefully unadvertised Prime, I expect to see even more Primes, which suit to a "T" our congested transportation needs. We enthusiastic Prime owners will bring in converts to the fold as I have with several friends and neighbors!

A Tesla was never in the equation as they have no range extender option. As for the Volt, there is no default TSS-P equivalent UNLESS you are willing to pay a heck of a lot more and wait for the custom order. Sorry, the $4.5k tax credit and ordering the car 1,200 miles away was a much better deal. Better than the Hyundai Blue that doesn't even have a TSS-P option.

no worries, the volt recommendation was for MNdriver, who wants more range and a smaller gas tank, not for satisfied thin skinned prime owners.

Not everyone prioritizes pure efficiency for their ride. For someone with home solar, or green electric choices, shifting more miles to EV from gasoline with a Volt could be more important.

    Choice is good.
Blame CARB's ZEV credit scheme. It incentivizes selling cars without an ICE at all. The PHEVs help the manufacture some, but they don't get any of those transferable ZEV credits. For people looking for HOV access, GM is better off getting them into a Bolt. The amount of ZEV credits that a FCEV gets means Toyota doesn't have to sell many at all.
