As I told you in (I think) my first response to this thread, I suspect a failed or defective battery temperature sensor, or something similar.

Mine has been outside all day below 46F dozens of times and I've never once had the ICE kick on unexpectedly in those conditions.

I've already taken it to the dealer, they showed me a page from the manual about why ICE kicks in and ignored my request to fix it.

Dealers tend to be liars or morons. We had to force a dealer to fix my defective Ford Explorer by writing to the company directly and threatening them with publicity and legal action. So they fixed that which they said wasn't broken.

meanwhile today around 7:00PM I went out to Walmart ICE stayed off. Only thing different is I left the car plugged in, charged it Saturday today's temperature was the same as Friday 46 F. So taking it to the dealer will be a shot in the dark because the car probably will behave itself while being babysat by the dealer.

It's supposed to be 30 degrees F when I leave work tomorrow. The car will have been outside getting snowed on all morning, and it won't be on charge. When I leave, I'll accelerate to 55, descend a 6% grade hill and then ascend a similar 6% grade hill. I suspect the ICE won't start. If it doesn't, you can use that information to encourage your dealer to do the right thing.

Man, 30°!!! Ouch!! I'm stuck in high 80's and 90's, until today when we finally saw 76°. And we all live in the same country!! Crazy weather, but of course not according to some disbelievers! I've lived 61 years in Socal and I've never seen such crazy, extreme weather; pity the grandkids!

I'm in Colorado where we actually have weather. This is a light storm for this time of the year (less than 1" of snow predicted, temperatures around freezing). I've seen 7 feet of snow in front of my house, more than an inch of rain in 15 minutes, temperatures from -25F to -10F for a work week, 140mph winds at work, and racquetball-sized hail.

Ok, thanks guys. It took me a year to convince me that there is something actually defective with the car and it's associated with temperatures below 50 F. I'll get ahold of the service manager and have a heart to heart talk with him, I will not accept a page from the Toyota Manual stating why ICE kicks in. But I'll wait till it happens again.:D

Dixie had a little hoar frost last night so I carefully drove to the dawn light to clear the windshield. Then I 'fat fingered' the defrost button and the car went into "EV/Auto" mode and the engine kicked in ... dang it!

At the end of my 'dogs to the dog park' and picking up breakfast, the car parked at home with over 170 MPG on the trip meter. Just the windshield defrost button action has already been well documented and certainly creeping to the early morning sun light did not turn the engine on.

    Show them this picture.

    29°F
Car outside all day in freezing drizzle
    Ice on car surface
    55mph
    6% uphill grade
    Heat on automatic

Engine stayed off for the entire trip.

^ well, you did have 48% charge remaining. If it was 10% or a little below that, would it stay in EV mode? Mine doesn't.
