First anecdote on Qi charging an iPhone X:

I received an iPhone X yesterday and took it on a round-trip today in my Prius that was about 50 minutes in each direction. In both directions I was running Apple Maps navigation and had the iPhone (with the Apple silicon case) on my Qi charger.

Outbound, I didn't learn much as the the charge as 100% at both the start and finish of the trip. By the time of my return, the charge level had dropped to 88%. The Qi charger maintained that level, but did not increase it.

So, based on the initial run, it appears that charger is fine for maintaining a charge level, but not for recharging. Note that I can plug in a 2-port Anker charger that charges up to 2.4A for each port if I need to actually recharge.

This has been my experience with a Samsung S7 as well. If you are using NAV, the Qi is just not enoug juice to charge while compensating for keeping the display on with high brightness to combat the Florida sun. So this isn’t really limited to the iPhone. Once Apple puts out the firmware update to enable the 7.5 watt charging this may change, but I doubt it will get 7.5 Watts from the Toyota Qi charger. I think it’s limited to 5.

Thanks for posting this by the way. I wasn’t lucky enough to get my order in fast enough because I couldn’t access their website. So my delivery date isn’t until end of November. But I’ve been curious about what people have been experiencing with it and what to expect when I get mine.

My 5 year old Nexus 6 has fast charging built-in, but could not run Nav app and charge at the same time using Qi. Nice to see Apple catching up on the technology.

Samsung decided to use their own fast charging technology. Apple is working to enhance the Qi standard.
Many people think the Samsung Note fire issues were related to them combining their fast charging with a waterproof phone.

Yes, but my Google Nexus 6 had all these good things, less facial recognition five years ago. Plus, it wakes up when I pick it up. A feature my s-i-l boats about with his New iPhone 8!

But can it make phone calls?
It seems like manufacturers add "everything but the kitchen sink" into a device that is into a device whose primary function is supposed to be a kitchen sink.

Oh yes sir. The call quality was superior to my son-in-law's iPhone.

Sorry! Got a bad bad case of pride and began to gloat unnecessarily!
Perhaps I'm entering my second childhood as a Google fanboy!!!!

I had a Nexus 5 and found out that much of the Google Nexus hype was just hype. A carrier change forced me into an iPhone 6, which I still use.
Google & Verizon had a spat so they were the only carrier where the Nexus 5 did not work, even though it had the capability.

The iPhone only needs 1 amp, as evidenced by the 1 amp power cube it comes with. That said, Qi chargers must put out less than 1 amp, if it can’t charge when the screen is on, like with nav running.

Actually, the iPhone will sometimes use more than 1 amp if the charger allows this. I have tested this with a 2 amp iPad charger and a current meter. But that is usually only when the battery is pretty low. Normally 1 amp is enough.

I am happy to report that my iPhone 8+ will charge reliably in the Prius Qi charger, even with a Magpul case. I don't think it will gain much when running nav with the screen illuminated, but it does seem to hold its own. I also got a window mount Qi charger/holder gizmo when I want to have the phone high enough to read the screen well.

Because Toyota did a a poor job installing a single coil wireless charger, now if you buy a dual coil charger it is faster.

My iPhone 8 only holds its charge in my 2016 Prius. It actually gains charge in my 2014 Avalon. Both are QI Chargers.

Same here iPhone X will not gain any charge from Qi if I’m using navigation and listening to music through bluetooth.

I use Qi for short trips to the store and I have an normal cigarette lighter charger and a Kenu Airframe pro vent clip when I use navigation.

I like to TomTom Go app on my iphoneX, I find it better than apple or google maps (bought the licence years ago but updates are still free).
I pretty much never use the prius builtin navigation.

Would you happen to have a photo of your setup I'm curious how it looks. Any issues with it or the phone falling out?
