Another hamster here. I haven't installed anything in the Pri. I run APRS from it sometimes with a mag-mount antenna though.

The HF rig is a Yaesu FT-301SD. I believe it was Yaesu's first solid state transceiver and one of the first with a digital frequency readout. The "S" version lacks the final amplifier stage, so RF output peaks at about 13 watts when the antenna's a good match. It gets through nicely on CW.

So how would QRP work in the noise box. I could do QRP 40M to 6M in my Prius V three but i'll have to check what the noise levels are like on SSB. I guess I could put my laptop in the car and do digital mobile. Now that would be a hoot. Imagine PSK-31 at 75 MPH or 120 KPH. I've got to check that out.

I run QRP portable. Haven't run any rigs in my vehicles for 25 or so years. I go out and setup and operate either out of the back of my car or use a table and chair that I carry around. My go to portable antenna is a 44' doublet fed with 300 ohm twin lead into a 4:1 balun then into a LDG auto tuner and a FT817ND. I run it all off a jump start battery box which houses a 22ah SLA. Most of my portable is SSB but I do run CW if I am in the mood :p

KI6SGO tech license from behind the Orange Curtain in SoCal. Ham for the past 6+ years, mostly for off road use as CB's just don't cut it! Joined this forum last week looking for info on installing a Yaesu FT-8800r in my 2013 Prius Five. Not new to discussion boards and have been beating the search engine here to death all this past week. Been on off road boards with my Landcruiser for years and have an FT-8800r in the truck running it with a Diamond K400c hatch mount and Comet SBB-7 (onroad) and Comet SBB-1 (offroad little flexible antenna). Lengthy post in the Gen2 section that I found searching for install ideas here:
Amateur Radio in a Prius | PriusChat

Looking forward to the install after I figure out how/where/with what I'm going to mount the face plate to the 8800.

I realize this message is a few years old, but if someone doesnt want to drill holes then you can always use 3M VHB or Gorilla brand mounting tape, it holds up to 30 lbs and works great. I used it in my install and I've used it in my work. No holes were drilled, no Prii dash was harmed....

    Hello,

John KD5INM here. Sept 2 2017 I became the owner of a 2013 Prius C. Its a great car. I have been enjoying the gas savings and its fun to drive. I installed my Kenwood TM-D710GA in it along with a trunk lip mount NMO mount on the rear hatch lip at the roof line of the car. I posted photos of my install in the Prius C forum. I used 3M VHB to mount the bracket to the underside of the dash. No holes were drilled.

Rick VA7RX. Installed an Icom ID-4100a with a custom L bracket under the shifter. Attached with 3M command fasteners. No holes in the dash, and it removes clean!

Antenna on the right rear quarter panel with a stainless L bracket. I drilled two holes and installed rivnuts to mount it.

Also just installed a 1/4 220mhz antenna on the front left quarter panel in the same manner.

What Command strips did you use? I had thought about using it myself. I have the tool to remove the VHB.

I bought a package of refill strips from Home Depot. It comes with small, medium and large. I used two of the large ones.

Some notes and experiences on my install for those interested.

I installed an ID-4100a dual band radio and a Kenwood TH-F6a hand held radio for 220mhz. Both are mounted under the seat with the ID-4100 control head mounted under the dash.

I was cautioned about strange electronics under the hood, so I approached this install with caution. I ran 12g power direct from the battery to under the front passenger seat. Also installed coax from the left rear and left front quarter panels with nmo mounts on L brackets. Dual band antenna on the back and a 1/4 wave 220 on the front.

As the 220 radio was hidden under the seat, and therefore unaccessable to power on or off, I decided I wanted my battery power switched with the ignition. 20A fuses on both pos and neg right at the battery.

To switch the power on and off I installed a relay on the pos wire and powered the relay from a fuse tap under the hood.

This is where I scared the crap out of myself. My 2017 Prius Technology Advanced (Canadian model, highest one). only has 2000km on it as of this writing, so it is extremely new. I got a little confused with my wiring because the relay didn't identify which wire was which. Rather than sit down and sort it out, I "winged it". I got the power for the relay sorted out in short order, but had difficult identifying which lead was common and which was NO and NC.

When the car was on, I pulled the fuse. Oddly, I heard the radiator fan start up. When I plugged it back in the fan stopped. When I sat in the car, I saw the dreaded yellow triangle on the dash and a warning that the hybrid battery had malfunctioned and I needed to see the dealer. Then I got the same message regarding the pedestrian warning system. This got my pulse racing a bit. I powered down the car and powered it up again. Same messages!

I removed my relay and returned everything back to stock and went looking for my $20 chinese OBDII reader. Fortunately I was able to reset the codes (whew!).

Anyway, I sorted out the relay and all is good now.

Here is a picture of my dash install for those interested.

I keep circling around the idea of getting a ticket, but then like the proverbial squirrel I always drop the acorn that I'm holding and dash across the yard towards another one.....
I even used to be able to do the dah-dit-da-da dah-dah-dit-dah thing.

    HOWEVER (comma!)
For 'some reason' I've found a powerful incentive to start buying re-loading equipment and supplies......

    Maybe next year. :(
