Google earth has the ability to plot the altitude differences. I don't want to compromise your home and work locations but you could 'crop' a screen shot to share just the elevation changes. The reason I bring this up is Huntsville is in the Tennessee valley and we have steep ridges within a mile of our home. Tonight's forecast is freezing temperatures at dawn, a good time to try and replicate your symptom.

I would but Google is NOT my friend tonight, everything I tried to even FIND how to do what you're asking has stymied me:mad:

So a one hundred foot elevation from home to work results in ICE kicking in?

I park outside overnight; all the time. It was 17 degrees F this morning. Temp went up to 25 by the time I left for work. ICE didn't turn on. Range remaining was 70% and no heat was on since my commute is 1.5 miles and it isn't worth turning it on for such a short drive.

ICE has only switched on once at low temps in EV-only mode, as the EV% remaining hit 9%, dropping very fast and the heat pump heat was on at 74 degrees and the fan was on level 4. I can believe that the car calculated the range was about to go to zero a couple of minutes thereafter.

The temperature 42F, heater on, engine did not come on. Continued test and already at +15 miles and speeds to 55 mph.

Did you start out on an immediate climb? or did you have to travel some distance to get to your test elevation? The reason I say this is because as in the 2012-2015 PIP and now the Prime if you travel at speeds of 25 MPH or slower for the first mile and a half then resume a faster speed of say 35-45 MPH ICE will not kick in. The 25 MPH is probably not enough of a load on a cold battery for ICE to kick in. Just my observation.:D

It will be colder at night, and even after nine hours, there will still be some residual heat in the battery.

Would disconnecting the 12 volt lead to the car unlearning all the users driving style? Maybe the ICE got triggered on once, and now the car thinks it needs to come on in error.

The only problem with your assumption is I have a rental Prime that does the same thing.

the immediate hill climb in post #467 might be the problem. do you have another direction you can take to see if the engine starts?
for reference, i have one direction that starts my pip engine when it's below 35 degrees, but any other direction, and it doesn't.
also, if i drive a mile on the flat, if i then go the direction that usually starts it, it doesn't start.

Not enough time in my rental period to test out that theory, but when I pick up my car I will test out this new piece of the puzzle.:D

@bwilson4web can you map out my elevation going east on 14 mile road for about 2 to 3 miles?

I asked @bwilson4web to map out going east on 14 mile road, didn't get a response back so I tried it. I mapped out 255 west 14 mile road Clawson Michigan to dequindre and 14 mile road. Couldn't get the elevation map to show up but was able to mouse over the path and see the elevation readouts and it looks like it's going downhill. anyway, I went east on 14 mile road 45 minutes ago and ICE kicked in. 36 F

is it way downhill, or just slightly? at what distance/acceleration/speed did the ice kick?
