First 15 minutes of this Consumer Reports video on automobile excessive oil consumption is enlightening and brings up some of the same points that you all have raised. Guess it could be worse if we had a Porsche, Subaru or BMW.

it's not the same issue. They are talking about oil consumption in brand new cars. we all know prius has problem with consumption after about 100,000 miles when the oil control rings (that are low tension in the first place) wear out and/or get plugged up (these things go together).

Thanks for the link. Its a nice article. What I've learnt? Just do that oil change, before the 5k miles set by Toyota.

I'd agree with you. I don't just accept people waiting for that 10k mikes before an oil change. It kinda doesn't make economic sense to me either.
What kind of synthetic grade are people using to warrant that long period of oil change? People that wait that long, in my opinion, must be ready for the risks.

In Canada Toyota stuck with 8000 kms (5000 miles roughly) or 6 months, whichever comes first, for oil and filter change. For the third gen. I believe with fourth gen they've adopted the US 10K mile or 12 months.

You're free to ignore them, do 6 months or 5K miles. I'd ignore their lifetime transaxle fluid claims too: actually an early change of that fluid seems the most critical.

My opinion its the quality of gas that results in oil consumption.
Wrote that in another thread also. Poor quality gas results in more carbon and that causes clogged up egr and piston rings.
Here in europe there is almost none prius with oil consumption. Almost all our gas has a cleaning additive.

I recommend switching to thicker oil and only use Toyota oil Filters and oil changes at 5k miles. Also letting the engine go throught the first warm up cycle before moving and driving easy off the line.

So Toyota Europe is not advising thicker oil? 0W-30 or 0W-40?

No its 0w20 here, thats what the manual says. I thinks thats the oil where the engine is made for.

You're perfectly right. This was what made me overhauled a 2008 Prius 1NZ engine sometime ago. On analysis, I discovered the oil control rings, below the 2nd compression rings had akredy worn out. I opted for the rebuild, just because 1), time wasnt money to me, 2) buying a used engine and fitting it directly, wasn't an option, because I have ni clue of the engine's history.

I don't think this oil would be compatible for tropical climates like in Africa, where you have temperatures in the 35-40°C range

You are welcome to your opinion.

But virtually NOBODY else in the whole world shares it.

There are a lot of factors at work and fuel quality is way, WAY down the list.

The fuel in the US is also required to have a certain level of "cleaners".
