Energy Usage White Charging

    After charging the prius many times today I wanted to check how much actually energy the car uses, so the car in the normal 120v uses 1,395 Watts while the 240v uses 2,200 Watts, but the car shows only taking on the 120v about 1,000 watts and in the 240v about 1,800 watts, so pretty much everything else is using about 400 watts of power juts to run the charging system, is this correct? while there is energy getting lost in the wiring I wanna think is not really that much, isn't the charging system using too much energy? I have a nissan leaf too that I will test later today to see how much energy is the charging system taking.

    past measurements have been in the 10-15% range.

    I've never looked. Mine just finished charging. I'll try to check it asap to see if it matches. I don't have an L2 charger, but I think your L1 watts from the wall is pretty close to what my Killawatt meter reads. But I don't have a reference to tell me how accurate the Killawatt is, either. :whistle:

    I looked last night when I plugged in. Just a peek before setting the timer. I was kind of shocked. No pun intended.

    My display showed 1.0 kW and the Killawatt showed 1,845 watts. Looked again at the car's display and it was still 1.0 kW. Granted, the Killawatt may not be highly accurate, but that's a big difference. Maybe an L2 EVSE will pay for itself sooner than I thought.

    Judging by the amps the evse takes is about 12 amp at 120 that's about 1,440 watts, if the car is only taking 1 kwh that's almost half a kilowatt wasted every hour on 120v, that's a lot of power that now I have to keep in mind when I calculate the cost of driving the car, for those that still are in 120v maybe would be a good idea to move to 220v instead as an evse now cost about $170 on ebay plus $20-30 if you install the power outlet your self maybe it will pay off faster than we think!!!

    Deoc, you have me considering a L2 charger for the the first time. I see eBay has about 25 of these in the $180 range, mostly being sold by one guy in Ontario, California. There's no AC plug on it, but he includes a free dashcam. I'd sure like to know if anyone has any experience with one of these chargers. (Link goes to ebay search) https://goo.gl/KhwMyJ

    Our (NZ) grid supplies 240 volts, and I have the 10A EVSE from my Leaf, plus a 6A/10A/16A unit. My wall meter using either indicates a fairly steady 2400W draw. My PiP dash displays an almost constant 1.9kW, with the odd flicker down to 1.8. A full charge takes between 75-80 minutes typically, tapering off near the top. That's pushing 80% efficiency - if you can get an L2 setup for a good price, seems like a no-brainer!

    I agree. Thanks for the comparison. Another factor is that for most of the year, there are 2 or 3 times a week where I get home from work, eat, and dash out for another meeting. L2 would help a lot with that, possibly even get me a full charge before I head out again.

    I did a test yesterday with the 220v charger, here is what happened, the car started charging at 11:50 am, all breakers off except the charger, the meter reading was 2.29 kwh, at 12:52 pm the meter total kwh increased by 2 kwh, at about 1:02 pm the meter was reading only 0.770 the car was taking only about 0.5 kwh, at about 1:18 pm the car stopped charging because it was full, so the car in total took less that 3kwh, my calculation is probably about 2.5 kwh in total, no what I thought, the car said 2 hours to charger at 2.3 kwh thats 4.6 kwh, so it looks like the timer in the car is no very exact so in reality it doesn't waste as much as I thought, probably something similar happens in the 120v evse, I will make a test in the next few days to find out if there is any big difference

    According to my Killawatt, mine at 120V takes 3.3-3.5 kWh from the wall, depending on how much I ran it down beyond the ev range.
