Prime Spare Tire tie down strap Help Needed

I have stored mine in a plastic bag on the floor behind the passenger seat, but not tied down. Still looking for an easy way to do that.

 

Could you run a detachable strap through the open end of the bag through the center of the wheel and anchor to the bottom seat rail bolts of the front seat? That's a lot of loose weight in the passenger area in the case of an impact.

 

Pretty sure I could. When I went off on my summer 2,000 mile trip, I kinda ran out of time to figure all that out so I just tossed it in there. I will be more prepared, hopefully, next time I stray so far from home. The tire/wheel I use is the donut spare from my wife's Lexus CT200h. Same exact tire/wheel/size as the basic Gen4 model's spare, and it fits the Prime perfectly. I was prepared to buy one of those when I looked at both cars in the driveway and the lightbulb went off.

 

Attached is the instruction from 2010 Owner's Manual, how to use the hold-down strap with a flat tire. Did the car come with the strap? If not, dealership parts departments should be able to get it in, and I see them on EBay, for under $20

 

Maybe a use for all the bubble wrap from all the Amazon boxes we collect?

I would not trust that. There are incredible forces at play in a collision. Does the Prime not have luggage tie down rings in the back like previous generations? I brought the wife's mini spare on this trip and it's tied down to one of those D rings.

 

Primes not only don't include tie down straps, but they also lack any D-rings to attach straps to.

 

Due to the hatch floor bump, the regular D-rings would be submerged? That's too bad.

 

Bummer! Sounds like an opportunity for an inventive entrepreneur. Except for the liability.

 

I would not risk my life on it. Some years ago I saw a video on loose objects inside the cabin area and the damage they did. They were testing with very small objects in the 1 lb range. It was pretty eye opening and made an impression. I would not risk something in the 15-20+ lb range. That's just me.

 

A temp spare's I'd guesstimate around 30 lbs. Full size 15" spare's around 35 lbs.

 

Yeah, food for thought. Our car came with a cargo net, have never used it. But something like a case of tinned goods could pack a wallop. At least your odds are better: it's only in the car intermittently.

 

Probably true. I think about that every time I take a trip. As I'm doing right now. The slight difference between a spare and a suitcase is that the larger suitcase has a harder time getting over the back seat and between the headrests.

They took a regular Prius, raised the floor 4~5 inches, yoinked out the spare, sent it rolling off the end of the driveway, did a bit of tarting up the bumpers, and dubbed it the "Prime". Looking at the above pic, subbing a tractor-yellow temp spare for the suitcase, what a dog's breakfast.

 

I guess this is somewhat tangential to your question but I was wondering the same thing - I just got my 2018 Prime Premium Saturday and it is very nice - first new car in nearly 20 years so, there's that excitement too - but the lack of the spare is mildly worrisome to me in that I commute ~75 miles daily.

I think the back seats have the Latch system to hold a child seat in place. I was wondering about wrapping the tire up to keep it from messing up the seat (maybe bubble wrap or plastic) and then securing it to the Latch system rings with a strap.

Obviously that doesn't help much if someone uses the back seat for passengers.

Just a thought.

I had a 2012 model Prius plugin. It came with the full size straps as part of the sale and made by Toyota. I kept it when I traded in the car for a Prime. Make me a offer. Brand new
