Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    Should add that I know someone from this forum who switched from a Prius 3 to an Ionique SEL, and she reports that she can't detect a difference in the braking. She does say that there is a clicking when she taps the brakes, and that the dealer is looking into this.

    The problem is "Prius 3" is ambiguous. Perhaps that individual might post their opinion?

    As I recall, the Ioniq hybrids got off to a bad start in Spritmonitor, because the first ones were delivered in winter, which skewed the statistics compared to the Gen4 Prii, which already had a summer of fair weather mileage behind them. As expected, after a full summer, the Ioniqs have pretty much caught up with the Prii:

    2016-2017 Prius ... 163 cars ... 4.41 l/100km ... 53.5 mpg ... Spritmonitor - Prius
    2016-2017 Ioniq ... 128 cars ... 4.64 l/100km ... 50.7 mpg ... Spritmonitor - Ioniq

    They're still a little bit behind, but I don't know if it is statistically significant. Anyway, it is close enough that I consider the Ioniq a worthy Prius competitor.

    I've just checked with my fellow Prime (PHV) owners here in Portugal and they say it works in Reverse, 2 seconds "hold", no signs/dash, just that.
    (note that the hill-assist will work if the Parking Brake is off, as per manual)
    Same as forward, they also told me.
    Better to check at a dealer/shop, its' so strange an AU spec'ed be different from European versions.

    Weird.
    GM's hill start assist just...works.
    Stop on an incline, and it automatically engages. No need to press harder or have a light come on. I think our Fords worked the same way.

    For the longest time I thought something was wrong with Toyota transmissions because of the rolling on hills.

    Manual transmissions are uncommon here, and most don't even know their car has a parking brake.
    The reports at Fuelly are better for the Ioniq at 52.1mpg for the 2017. The US didn't get the car until warm weather though. 2017 Hyundai Ioniq MPG - Actual MPG from 143 2017 Hyundai Ioniq owners
    The gen4 Prius is a bit lower; in the higher 52.x mpg range.

    That might be slightly skewed by the plug-ins. I don't see a quick and easy way to filter them out at Fuelly.

    A big hold on this statement, please. I'm afraid I have been given wrong testemonials, at least one has assured me that his Prime/PHV rolled (immediately, no 2 sec delay) while in R.

    Oh yes, Fuelly needs to address the issue with PHEVs. There might even be an Electric in there.
    The eight 2016's there average better than the 2017's, and contain no plug ins. The 26 2017 SELs also seem to do better than the 2017 average.

    You may or may not have taken a test drive in an Ioniq like I did. Just along with other issues, I was disappointed by the 'stepped' transmission. Recently we've had another thread about riding in a self-driving car and others pointed out how they, like me, can suffer from motion sickness. That thread reminded me of how many times 'stepped transmission' cars have made me car sick ... not a pleasant experience.

    This thread dates from December 2015: Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor? | PriusChat and near as I can tell, it has been a blatant, free, marketing attempt to get Prius owners to buy the Ioniq. Approaching the two year anniversary, this thread has long lost any "newness" or "news" content. Worse, we've seen plenty of Hyundai press releases (do you need citations?) comparing the Ioniq as 'better than a Prius.' IMHO, this marketing thread needs a more appropriate home in "Other cars." The irony is this Ioniq thread has been a spectacular failure.

    In December 2015 we owned a Gen-1 and Gen-3 Prius. Today we own a 2014 BMW i3-REx and 2017 Prius Prime and neither car has a stepped transmission. The Ioniq was not available when we bought our 2014 BMW i3-REx in May 2016 but was available when we bought our 2017 Prius Prime in December 2016.

    This thread has long lost any news value until another thread about self-driving cars and motion sickness reminded me about "barf bags". The stepped transmission is a real Ioniq risk for motion sickness.

    It's not Old News here yet - hasn't arrived on our shores. Apparently next year, we'll see the Hybrid & Plug-In Hybrid - no news of the EV.

    We have just received an updated version of the i3. I was hoping they'd put a larger tank in the Range Extender to make it a long distance tourer, sadly, not.

    In the USA, we have a CARB inhibited BMW i3-REx. I assume Australia is free from this nonsense. What is the rated gas tank size?

    The reason I ask is I've coded my BMW i3-REx and now have 2.3 gallons (US) of usable tank capacity. However, I've seen one EPA reference that suggests the absolute tank size may be 2.8 gallons.

    BMW Website doesn't say, but 2 recent Road Reports say only 9 litres which = 2.4 galleons. I hoped they might double it and give maybe a 500km touring range. I think my next car will be a Plug-in hybrid - I suspect by then, there will be a few options around.

    Pardon the silly question, but what do you mean by a stepped transmission? I know the Ioniq has a six-speed transmissions -- is that what you mean, and why is it so problematic?

    Yes, the multi-speed transmission is the problem. Although a dual-clutch transmission is less bad than a traditional, stepped transmission, the engine still has to change speed and acceleration is not as smooth as an eCVT. I have the same problem with bus travel.

    I got to try Hill Start Assist today - found a steep hill.

    FORWARD, drove up, braked to a stop normally, remained in "D", car remained stopped while I fiddled for a second or 2 and when I pressed the throttle, moved off nicely.

    REVERSE, selected reverse, pressed brake, foot off brake and the car rolled forward, braked again to a stop, when I released brake, car rolled forward again till I intervened.

    SUMMARY - it works in FORWARD only

    come on bob, your that worried about the competition :) :)

    but as I have said before the interesting point will appear to be about another 12-24 months when Ioniqs start coming up for replacement, then we will see if any first time hybrid drivers who chose the Ioniq swap to a Prius

    we have a number of ex Prius drivers on the dark side, will also be interesting to see if we see any migrate back when they next change their cars
