The so-called engineers who went for this MFD approach, both here on the Prime and particularly on the Tesla, show a frustrating obsession with bells, lights, and whistles; they can't stand being even momentarily separated from their overblown iJunk!! I think the sane cautious driver has enough crap to deal with on the road, surrounded by a plethora of puzzled, peasants. Focus on the road, not your toys!! Texting is another of these "modern" distractions; add it all up, and you get a frenzied, distracted driver just trying to make it out alive!! Adding all those flashing lights, buzzards, warnings, etc. etc., will end up causing more accidents. What happened to just "driving" your car?!
Now, where was that screen again, let's see push this here twice, then hold this down, then slide this over....!! Neighbor, PLEASE!!

Check with your carrier. T-Mobile has free spam caller blocking. All you do is enter a couple of "pound codes" and it will say "Spam caller" when a junk call comes through, so you can block it. Nice and easy!

If done well, this is an improvement. Who wants to go back to flip phones? Toyota is making the switch difficult with their awful UI.

 

I would LOVE to have a viable flip phone!
So called "Smartphones" are leading to much more distracted driving, annoying isolation of people (Note, 2 couples recently spotted in a restaurant, completely engrossed in their individual stupid phones, oblivious to their environment!), rude behavior at bank lines, and in supermarket lines, obsessive game-playing, kids not listening to parents, RIDICULOUS waste of HUGE amounts of money for a frivilous toy (iPhone X for $1000+ tax; are you kidding me!!), eyestrain, I'm just getting started!! My Nokia flip phone battery still holds a charge and didn't cost a million dollars; it's still a GOOD PHONE! I still don't NEED a phone to scratch my butt, but watch, it's coming!And I hope they ban/stop texting while driving!! How annoying and dangerous!

Yeah, poorly designed interfaces make the change horrendous.
Tesla has the best I have seen yet, but I am sure further improvements can be made.
I far prefer Tesla’s UI over any other, but

 

We have a scenario driving, down a steep hill to a coastal highway. Especially on rainy nights, the windshield starts fogging up. I'm already not too thrilled, having to take my eyes repeatedly off the windy road to get the system into heat/defog vent mode, and ours doesn't have the MFD.

 

I don't recommend the flip phones I have to support. Horrible interface and crap carriers. The people who buy those really need Jitterbug phones that just make phone calls.

Just get the "new" Nokia candy bar phone. Those are virtually indestructible, and they're easy to use.

As far as Android carrier-locked devices go, carriers call the shots about the features the phones will have, most of the software that's loaded on the device, whether or not they're going to have OS version updates, etc. It's not the manufacturer's choice.

The MCU 11.6 is a love it or hate it design. I'm more on the side of love it since it makes the car looks extreme slick. However, I do appreciate the physical controls with cars that do have them. Wait until you get into a Tesla Model 3, there are no more physical buttons in the damn car.

 

And there is no HPrimeAdvanced !! He is keeping his money for the next iteration of the Toyota Prime Advanced (hopefully a coupe!).

They make gloves with conductive material on one or more fingertips that work with capacitive displays. Not too hard to find I even got some at Walmart that work okay. Some are somewhat thin, good enough for driving, but they make outdoor ones also. Here are a couple of sample links:

I do not think a screen will ever be a replacement for knobs. You can not feel a screen. Eventually we will understand this.

Yeah, and auto-correct software that converts "buzzers" to "buzzards"; a sort of religious experience (if you don't keep hawk-eyes on your text; I've just got to quit drinking those 5ths of scotch for breakfast AND dinner, so I can keep a sharp eye on the text!)!!

Speaking of gloves, you might not need the special cell phone type gloves. My cheapo thin work gloves with rubber coating on the fingers works fine on the touch screen.

 

I just ordered a pair! It was 15 yesterday when I left for work and below my bar for cheap little gloves.

 

At work, we use an Ipad to input data for wait times at various locations. Sometimes, the Ipad malfunctions, and causes the area on the screen where we need to "tap" in the location goes completely black. We have 8 locations, with each location have 8 windows. So when the map area is black, we have to "guess" where location 8 window 3 is. It is hard enough to get to location 8 on a black screen, let alone window 3! Our solution? 3m note stickys on the Ipad screen showing the locations!!!

 

cost and repairs. eliminate 25 switches and that's 25 less mechanical things that can break and need to be repaired. It's also less expensive to design and manufacture without all those switches. The problems are, as others have said, finding that one switch in a menu in an emergency when you can't actually hunt for it, and then what happens when the touch screen breaks? you lose all 25 switches at once.
