I've purchased an 05 from a mechanic who says he took some classes from Toyota. He believes and has told me that since he let the battery sit for more than 6 months that it has discharged beyond 40% mark and thus will not start. He also says that the hv battery will charge if I pull the car behind a truck and start at some point when the bars are high enough.

    Input? I'm skeptical.

    welcome!

first, and most importantly; towing your car behind another vehicle will destroy the transmission, DON'T DO IT. (with the front tires on the ground)

secondly, you purchased the car, have you tried starting it?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes, I did try to start it. HV looked like it was ok until trying to start. It quickly went down and got the triangle of death. I can pull the battery and check things out. I just did not want to tow it until I got some more input and I'm glad I did.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. I love to learn.

While the mechanic may have “taken” classes, he might have been looking at the backs of his eye lids during some of them:(.

Towing the Prius can damage the transaxle, not recommended ;).

How many miles on the Prius? Why did he let it sit for over 6 months? Garden city is out there on (I used to live in Wichita), so finding a way to get the pack charged up might be a challenge :(.

You’ll more than likely have to deal with midwestern toyota and see if they can get in the charger, or find someone with the Prolong Charger, but given the area you live and the low population of Prii, it will be difficult.

But you won’t be able to do anything with the car j til the battery is at a higher charge state. I think there is a member outside of Kansas City that does battery rebuilds, so it might be worth searching around here;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

once you have a good 12v, you can move on to the hybrid battery if it won't start.
you have the option of trying to recondition the battery, rebuilding it, or replacing with new or salvage.

Thanks. It has 192K on it. He got the car to tinker with it (he is a diesel professor at a local college). He just got busy and didn't keep up with driving it every couple of weeks. We do have a dealership here in Garden now. I appreciate the input.

Are you a tinkerer as well? With 192 k miles on the Prius (and probably the hv battery pack), it’s more than likely a goner :(.

But just west of you in CO a member here who sells brand new batteries that you can install yourself :).

See this thread for more information:

Prius Battery Replacement (GenII) Like you've never seen - NEW Cylindrical Cells

Supposedly there are 4 available for shipping next month ;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

    Asked and answered.

Going to a class......even passing a class, does not an expert make.
I'd be a little careful about trusting this 'mechanic' to work on your car.

Going forward.....an 05 is a 13 year old car, but that's no reason that you couldn't make it a good reliable beater with a little luck, a few basic tools and a little internet research.

    Good Luck...
    Keep us posted!

    Thanks all!
I've got an appointment at Toyota in town penciled in for Tuesday. In the mean time I'll keep checking things out on the forum and check out that rebuild kit.

    Get second opinions.

Some Toyota dealerships that see 05 Priuses roll into their lots start researching for a new fishing boat.....

And you could do your part by reporting it.

No worries. I've moved it to Gen 2 Troubleshooting.

That towing thing.... He must've saw that Tesla Model S video and assumed what works on an electric car works for a hybrid. I certainly hopes he doesn't damages a customer's car by doing that. The Prius' parking pawl is automatically engaged when the car is off so the front wheels won't rotate.

I'd be very skeptical too! Sounds like the first thing you need to do is find a new mechanic! ;)
Practical advice: check out the many theads on AuxBatteries and TractionBatteries here on PriusChat!

Some are crooked enough to steal your car from you. I have a customer who originally took her car to the local dealership. They correctly diagnosed a bad HV battery. With the price shock of the repair, the sweet & caring service advisor offered to introduce a salesman to trade her out of the repair. This generous salesman told her that unfortunately they couldn't get any money for her car in the shape that it's in, but they could dispose of it for $500. This of course would be added to the payoff, which was added to the price of the newer vehicle.
With friends like that, who needs enemies? Thankfully she opted to replace her battery with a reconditioned one and kept her car!

So, I pulled the hv battery and here's what I found. Replaced three cells and it drove home. More to do on it but I think I have it licked. Thanks again for all the input!
