There's about 40K on our 2013 Prius (sorry I don't know the gen--it doesn't have any special features). On Christmas (way below 0 degrees) the car would start fine but when put it into drive, it jumped to neutral. Restarted, let it run for awhile, it went into drive ok. Next day, just as frigid, it would not stay in D--we had to hold the knob in drive all the way to the dealership--kinda scary. I'd done some research and saw some mentioned the accessory battery as a culprit. The dealership wasn't familiar with that possibility but later called & said it tested 8.6 and recommended replacement, which I did. When I picked up the car the next day, & put into D in the dealership lot, for a second it slipped back to N (then was ok) and has been fine till tonight. It sat outside for a few hours (again, -15 or so) and I had to monkey with it (starting/restarting) to get it to stay in D. I never start with the heat/lights, etc. on and am a light user of heat/ac always. This is our 2nd Prius and I just hate not to 100% rely on it starting. I'm not sure the dealership will have any other ideas since they hadn't heard of the phenomena. I appreciate any thoughts.

It could be the switch (the gearshift is a switch). If have read on this forum of one other failure of that part.

DO double check the battery voltage. There could be an interior light on all the time, such as the one in the hatch area, which will drain the 12V battery after a few days.

sometimes, the dealer forgets to charge up the new battery before installing, or perhaps didn't tighten all the connections securely.
unfortunately, this weather is playing havoc with a lot of automobiles.

The Generation (Gen) is based on the model year, not the features. The Model, such as Two, Three, Four, takes into account the added features. Gen 3 (3rd Generation) is for years 2010-2015.

A 2013 with 40K, could this still be warranty?

I think the dealership has dropped the ball so far. They've got an ailing 12 volt, but haven't got to the root of the shifter problem.

I'd second: could be shifter replacement will be needed.

The shifter is just an electronic button. Maybe the connector beneath it is loose? But something more insidious could be at play here.

I'm a little puzzled too, about OP's Prius being level 1. Aren't they rarer than hen's teeth?

Any differences in shifter with level 1? And/or, could it be when you start a new membership here, it defaults to 1??

What is the Display reading when it is neutral, in other words does it say N or D or R correctly when selected?

It was posted back while ago about the pcb electronic piece that the soldering job was bad from the beginning using crap quality solder wick. Someone here had to hold the shifter physically on D to keep it in drive. Just like the red ring of death on a video game console.

When it jumps to neutral, the display shows “N”. It shows D for a fraction of a second when I initially wanted to start moving then switches (& stays) to N.

Thanks for this info. It’s at the dealership now for an appt tomorrow but I’m afraid they’re going to say they can’t recreate it so don’t know what it is. I go to great lengths to have a car I can always rely on. This stinks.

When it jumps to neutral, the indicator jumps to N as well. It showed D for a fleeting second when I wanted to start moving forward.

agreed. unfortunately, at these temps, there's no guarantee of reliability for any car. the 12v is definitely a weak link.
