maybe call them, describe the situation and see what they recommend. you say they do all mechanical hybrid work besides batteries?

While they don't advertise as a repair garage, they do these types of repairs in their spare time. I find them very like-minded to a lot of users on this forum – just smart guys who know a lot of the ins-n-outs of Prius care and hybrid maintenance.

sounds like the right place to go, are they too far for convenience?

It's probably gonna be like a $200 tow, they're about an hour south from me. They only charge $75/hr for labor opposed to $129/hr, which helps.

so, from your post #62, have they already replaced the battery once under warranty, and you had to pay them for labor?

Correct. They replaced my battery once already, I just paid for the tech to come out and do it. My mechanic drained the HV trying to restart the car. It sounds like it may be dead again due to Toyota fiddling with it.

when they came and put the second battery in, it still wouldn't start, so now you feel it is another problem?

Most people here have guessed it's most likely another problem, as does Best Hybrid Battery seem to think. It does start on HV battery power, it just won't run. They can keep the car running using carb cleaner my mechanic said.

did they charge you for this diagnosis? if so, ask them for a printout of the trouble codes.

Yes, $129 for an hour of diagnosis unless I choose to have the repair done. I will ask them. It's tough because when I call them, I'm not even talking to the tech who looked at the car. It's just a guy who does calls all day and is looking at the report.

The report should have the trouble codes they found to justify the diagnosis.

After reading this thread, I really suspect it could be the fuel pump.

See post #2 in this thread and like @JC91006 ’s post;).

I believe the sealer is that they can get the engine to start when starter fluid is injected, but does once the fluid is gone.

    Good luck (y).

Done. So now the question is... do I risk having Toyota replace the battery under the condition that if it doesn't fix the issue, they don't charge me? Not sure how much they would charge for a fuel pump repair but sounds $$$. Or do I just have my Hybrid guys repair the fuel pump? Less labor cost, but then I still have a remanufactured batt + expensive tow cost..

The fuel pump is just below the battery and connected to the fuel tank.

Since they are there, that would be the best approach IMO.

    See what they say(y).

they won't agree to that anyway. if it were the fuel pump, wouldn't they have gotten a code?

I agree. Toyota will not replace the battery under the condition they do not charge you if it does not fix it.

I would think so. Are there cases where the computer may not pick up on sub codes if a step is missed in diagnostic?

I just got mine in the mail today. Too bad I didn't have it two weeks ago. Though, in this case not sure it would've been much help anyway.

In the thread I mentioned above, he indicated his computer never threw a code about the bad fuel pump, either.
